Would it be more cost efficient to have a subway line run under the Hudson from Staten Island to Brooklyn, then straight into Manhattan?
That's a compromise that serves three boroughs.
It also provides folks in Brooklyn subway access to the Staten Island Wheel.
Thoughts?

The first and biggest problem with this idea is that Staten Island DOES NOT WANT a subway extension. They are scared of colored people and density, the subway would bring in more of both. Besides, at the moment their drug problem is concentrated mostly among whites, once more colored people move in and fall victim to the same drug problems, the police are finally gonna start mass incarceration and a few poor white people will get caught up in it.

The second problem is that if you run the subway through Brooklyn, you're barely going to save anytime over the ferry. What would be the point of spending billions of dollars for shaving off 5 minutes?

The 3rd problem is where are you going to send the train in Brooklyn? Assuming you use the 4th Ave line in Brooklyn, The Dekalb Ave interchange between the 6th Ave and Broadway lines is already painfully slow, adding more trains to SI would make that interchange a nightmare. Plus, you can't add more than 12 trains per hour to the 4th Ave express trunk, spending billions of dollars for a tunnel that will be limited to 12tph is ridiculous.

If a subway is ever built to Staten Island, it should be a direct connection to Manhattan that can carry 30+ TPH that can branch out all over the island. The city should view it as a long term investment, as they can recoup the costs over 2 decades by no longer subsidizing the ferry. Not to mention the extra tax money they would get from increasing property values. This WILL never happen in our lifetime.

New York Wheel Crane Towers Over Staten Island Skyline

By Nicholas Rizzi
April 18, 2017

Quote:
The crane building the giant New York Wheel may be the high point of the St. George's skyline right now, but even its monolithic height will eventually be dwarfed by the full size of the new attraction, which is racing to become the tallest observation wheel in the world.

The New York Wheel will stand a whopping 630 feet — a full 170 feet taller than the crane now being used to construct it — when it takes over Staten Island's shoreline later this year.

Crews installed the 460-foot-tall crane at the construction site adjacent to the St. George Ferry Terminal last month, according to the developers. They used a smaller, 380-foot-tall one to build it.

The 1,000-ton crane is capable of lifting 1,350 tons. It will be used to put pieces of the New York Wheel in place, including the 275-foot tall legs, which arrived in Brooklyn in September.

Developers expect to finish construction on the actual wheel in the fall, but test the attraction's safety until April 2018, when the ride is scheduled to open to the public.

A changing view: NY Wheel already impacting Staten Island skyline

May 6, 2017

Quote:
You can see it from here. You can see it from there. You can see it from just about anywhere.

The construction of the New York Wheel, which will be the world's tallest observation wheel at more than 60 stories and 630-feet high, is steadily impacting the skyline of the North Shore.

At the moment, Staten Island residents can see the 460-foot and 380-foot cranes that are being used to construct the Wheel.

Once construction is completed, the New York Wheel will stand almost 200 feet taller than the largest crane and will dominate the St. George skyline. The $590 million project is part of a $1.2 billion redevelopment of Staten Island's North Shore.

Local residents have voiced mixed opinions in regards to the rapid development taking place on the North Shore.

"I think the development is going to help Staten Island get a better name for itself in New York City," said Nermin Kurtesi of St. George. "It'll be a reason to come to Staten Island more often for tourists. Since I live in the area, I'm excited to start running into people from all over the world."

While excited about the prospects of the development, Kurtesi did have some concerns.

"The construction is dangerous for the environment and for all of the traffic that goes on during rush hour on Bay Street," Kurtesi continued. "I also don't know how they're going to fit all those people in that area between the stadium, the Outlets and the Wheel. It's going to be a lot of traffic, people and cars."

When asked about how the Wheel fits into the Staten Island aesthetic, some residents weren't sold on it.

"I think it may look out of place once fully constructed," said Anthony Parisi of Rosebank. "St. George is not necessarily 'Downtown Staten Island' as it's been coined by the city."

However, he did see the potential benefits of the projects.

"I think the development overall is a good thing for the North Shore," said Parisi. "I just hope small, local businesses will see the economic benefits and not just large corporations."

The next significant step in the Wheel construction will be the installation of the 300-foot legs, which is scheduled to take place this month. The installation of the A-frame and hub and spindle will follow.

I think this is a nice project, even with everything else going on around the city. I'm excited by it and by the end of the year we should have the full view of the wheel.

I agree. Its good to have. The goal is clearly to cater to tourists, but the way I look at it, higher tourism numbers (which have been skyrocketing) is good for the city. Great for the economy, and I think the city has done a great job under Bloomberg and De Blasio in welcoming visitors, and with that, new business and opportunities.

The view is going to epic. Kinda one of those things where when I go on it, I hope it gets stuck due to some mechanical issues. At least I would enjoy the view while they fix it.

This project will most definitely be a staple in any tourists checklist (and even residents who take their kids out). The view is to die for.

It will become a distinctive mark on the skyline, becoming an instant landmark. Being so visible, in such a visible location will go a long way towards making this thing a part of the New York experience.

So, NYguy claims that each pod will hold 40 people.
Somehow, that doesn't seem very good (think of the screaming children) and other possible outcomes.

I honestly thought this was just another Ferris Wheel.

Bad project management, over budget, and delays. I think it will get resolved though. Not the first time projects have had issues or nuances like this, and bounced back.

You've had fatalities on projects, yet they continue. Shit happens, but for something like this, at the current stage that its in... would not be in the best interest of the developers. They will work on fixing it. Not just going to stop and forget about it.

Problems will always arise. Large scale projects have tons of them, either at the soft or hard cost stage of the game.

BUT, its not the MTA or Port Authority. Those people are incompetent. If delays and costs are what you want, they have a PhD in bad project management.

NY Wheel Construction Rolls on During Lawsuit

By Lindsay Tuchman
Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 10:13 AM EDT

While construction on the NY Wheel continues, controversy rolls on.

A lawsuit filed by the Wheel’s developer claims design team Mammoet-Starneth is demanding more money to complete the project and if they don’t get it, they’ll quit the job.

"They can't legally do that, that's what we explained to the court, that this is a unique project and people have to stay on the job and get the project done,” Randy Mastro from the Gibson Dunn law firm representing the NY Wheel said. “This is something that has a huge public benefit component."

The two parties decided to enter mediation and agreed that essential construction will continue, but they must reach a compromise by mid-July.

"But if it doesn’t, at that point the judge will be asked to take the steps necessary to keep the work going,” Mastro said.

I don't care if it takes 10 years, they better get this build safely and properly. Speaking for myself and all other potential riders.

Staten Island Ferris wheel project is spinning out of control

By Melissa Klein
June 25, 2017

Quote:
The design team building the 630-foot-high New York Wheel on the borough’s north shore got into a bitter pay dispute with the developer — and walked off the job in late May.

...Court filings revealed other problems threatening to bring the $600 million wheel — which would be the largest in the Western Hemisphere — to a grinding halt. Among them:

- Bad welds on the giant legs that will hold up the wheel have been flagged by city inspectors, delaying required approvals.

-The pad upon which the wheel will sit is “defective.”

- A “wrong” attachment between wheel and pad.

-Vast cost overruns and “extortionate” billing. The original $300 million price tag has doubled.

...A New York Wheel consultant said in court papers that the city Department of Buildings has yet to issue permits to go forward, a delay he blamed on the choice of manufacturers for the giant legs. The fabricators chosen by Mammoet-Starneth were not on the DOB’s approved list, and inspectors found “nonconformities that required remediation.”

Mammoet-Starneth blames New York Wheel for building a faulty pad to hold the wheel, and in court arguments maintained that there was “insufficient soil support and parts that don’t work.”

...A DOB spokesman said its special inspector “identified a minor problem with a few welds” that are in the process of being fixed.

“The developer has honored all of its contractual obligations and is committed to getting this unique project completed to the benefit of all stakeholders, public and private,” said a New York Wheel spokeswoman.
