Do you live in a city? (NPR Cities)

okay, don't take it seriously, just have fun with it:

http://www.npr.org

As for me, I scored a "Probably" an urbanist. Not bad for Anchorage, Alaska. My commute by car goes past more than 10 stoplights while my bus never goes over 50 mph (though almost at 45 mph in one stretch).

y tu?

"Probably" for Iowa City (taking a bus that doesn't go over 50).

I love that the one arrow going to "Definitely not" is "What Starbucks?"

Mine is:

Car ---> With little to no traffic ---> Fewer than 10 ---> No

I travel through 8 traffic lights in very minimal traffic. Granted if I took the bus or traveled the more direct route to work then it would change to Maybe.

Similarly, living near an Applebee's is a "No." Haha, for the most part the algorithm is dead on.

Yep.

My commute is 25 minutes but both my house and job are within 2 stoplights of the freeway.

I live short drive from one Applebee's and two Starbucks. One of the Starbucks is almost a walkable distance. There is a Whole Foods also barely within walking distance, but it is in a shopping center with a Costco. The shopping center also has a private park with a kind of lake and is encircled by a hiking and jogging trail. No trains around here, but there is a lot of bus service. Mostly we drive to get where we are going. Supposedly I am living in a city, a pretty big city actually. Probably not an NPR kind of city even though we have enough NPR listeners

I got a "probably" by sole virtue of the number of stoplights I pass through on my way to work.

Portland got a yes and Sacramento got a probably. Seems reasonable.

A combination of Yes, Probably and Maybe.

My bus goes on the Whitemud Freeway, but the speed limit is 80 km/h. From that bus, I grab the LRT and go from station to station to get on another bus which sticks to arterials but no freeways or highways all the way to work.

A quick and definite Yes. Makes sense, the subway question is a good indicator.

"No"

Car ----> With little to no traffic ----> Fewer than 10 stoplights.

The irony is that I live in a 40 floor building across from a subway stop within walking distance of 3 Starbucks and the highway I drive on has 300,000+ vehicles/day. I reverse commute and have 1 stoplight between me and highway and 2 between my office building and highway. The trains do not go to my office submarket (express busses do, however). Will be a bike commuter come 2014 when we move.

Subway = yes

Although Muni is a bullshit subway if I'm being honest, it's no true metro system.

Probably for LA haha. I like how it's also possible to get a No for LA if you commute on say the I-10 where you'd see mostly trees.

If I walk to work, I get "probably not." If I drive or take the bus, I get "probably," and if I bike I get "yes"!

Yep. i got the same but i live in a highrise just south of downtown Chicago, only 3 lights from the highway, 4 more to the office, and take the only 'real' reverse commute in the city. Hardly anyone works in Indiana and lives in the city like i do. The rest of the highways are pretty packed both ways though, so i lucked out.

I used to take the bus 20 mins into the west loop a couple years ago but transferred to a different office. but im not moving, despite hating the fact i have to drive. At the very least it is the most painless commute i have ever had to make.
