wow, my comment sure broke the jinx. 3 medals in quick succession. Thanks, Quebec, for the great athletes!

we are now ranked 30th in the medal count. not quite dancing banana territory, but things are certainly on the upswing.

30th ranked considering gold and silvers, but 12th in total medal count.

I am well aware of that. The convention is to rank by Golds, silvers, etc.

I'd say Christine Girard is more than 1/3 Québécoise. She grew up there and her formative years in her sport all took place there.

Anyway - very surprising coincidence once again to have all these medallists from a single province with less than a quarter of the population.

5th in women's team gymnastics, new best showing. I think I remember seeing that we hadn't even made the medal round before.

Olympic Rowing News Brief – July 31

Today's summary:

-Lightweight women’s double (LW2x) - second in rep, advance to semi

-Lightweight men’s double (LM2x) - fourth in rep, move to C/D semi

-Men’s double (M2x) - sixth in semi, move to B final

Check for highlights on CTV or www.ctvolympics.ca

Quick quotes:

Lindsay Jennerich (Victoria, BC) - light women’s double (with Patricia Obee) : "Obviously we wanted to go out and win the rep, but what we have to take home with us is recognizing that as we are moving through the regatta, we are improving immensely. The semi is going to be an extremely tough race... we'll have to race that semi like it's a final."

Douglas Vandor (Dewittville, QC) - light men’s double (with Morgan Jarvis): “We had a sluggish start in the heat, so we really wanted to come out firing in the rep. That's what we did, but we stumbled in the last 500m and when the other crew started coming through us we weren't able to respond, and ended up with a fourth-place result."

Tomorrow:

-Men’s pair semi-final, and men’s eight final at 12:30 pm local time.

You usually find that athletes at the Olympic level have spent most of their time around the country training and competing in different cities. I would say she's probably an 'all over the place' Canadian.

Can't believe Roanic lost that match.

Tsonga won the first set 6-3, Milos answered with his own 6-3 victory in the 2nd set and then the 3rd set went to 25-23 for Tsonga...

Insane.

You gotta give him credit for doing something unbelievable.

Tsonga was favored wasn't he?

The match was just shy of 4 hours in length. I watched the last 2 hours and I've seen enough tennis to last me a month!

................................................................................................................................................................................................

By the end of Day 4, Canada is #32 by official medal count and #11 by total medal count.

Bronze Nation!

In my mind, they're all wearing the Maple Leaf!

Also, what's with this goofy decision to basically 'wall off' the Olympics from the general public?

No chance to even see the Olympic Flame/Cauldron unless you have a ticket to an event at the Olympic Stadium?!?

I hope they have good "Live Sites" where the non-ticket-holding public can experience some Olympic spirit.

For anyone who follows gymnastics, a 5th place by Canada is absolutely astounding. Just qualifying a full team to the Olympics is a feat. 3.6 points behind defending Olympic gold medal China? This is 'off the chart' good.

I consider this, by far, the most impressive Canadian performance despite not winning a medal.

It's very annoying. They do have live sites though that are free of charge (but not for the Opening and Closing ceremonies! I've been going to the one in Hyde Park. They have 5 big screens showing different events (including one big one on the main stage), and food, drink, alcohol tents and other things like badminton lessons, the general basketball, volleyball, etc. games.

But them walling off everything is an incredibly annoying money grab

Also that Raonic-Tsonga match was insane. I started watching it after lunch, went the entire afternoon, walked home, started dinner and it was still on! Heartbreaking loss for Raonic, though Tsonga was heavily favoured and Raonic was very close to winning multiple times.

I predicted that Marois would say something like this. It ain't the first time for Mme Silent-toilets.

one commenter hit the nail on the head:
Quote:
The PQ's strategy has always included baiting rednecks into making stupid anti-Quebec statements, which the PQ can then highlight in their campaign towards holding another referendum.

Sadly, this aspect of the PQ's strategy works too well, and gullible fools rush to condemn Quebecers for statements made by a few separatists.

men's eight gets silver! best result by a defending champ since 1980, & really outstanding considering the rollercoaster week the guys have had, how tight the racing was in both the rep & the final, and that one of the guys didn't even start rowing until january 2010.

What exciting end to that race! Great to see the Canadians power back at the end and pass the Brits. The Germans were insane. Every single one of their rowers looks like a gigantic guy named "Klaus" who is the henchman bodyguard of a evil European villain.

Also let's go Clara Hughes! If she gets a medal today she is Canada's most decorated Olympian with 7.
