Black and noble: Broad & Erie, Philadelphia

Some quick shots of Philly's version of Times Square.

Max's is delicious. Glad to see this area on here, and I am also glad you (presumably) made it out fine. Nicetown is no joke. There are some fantastic bones in that area...I hope that they can someday get the attention they rightfully deserve.

I've always been curious about Max's but never been there. I'll check it out sometime.

Beautiful buildings there, and the place has such potential. It's still a very interesting place.

I've always called it 'Ghetto Times Square'. The Max's sign at night really give the intersection that effect.

But seriously, a lot of people today would be surprised to learn just how prominent that area used to be. This is a 1948 image of the intersection at rush hour:

Thanks for the views from a part of town we rarely see here.

"we ship to prisons."

that poor old beury building, she's beyond repair. only thing i could see is temple doing something with it, but for all the new building they've been doing (like the medical school, towering over a number of your pics), i don't see it happening.

nice little tour, cro. always did like the energy of this part of town.

Excellent! Is this like downtown Germantown? It reminds me of a busier Springfield Ave in Irvington, NJ.

Got a dark chuckle out of that. All the classiest establishments do.

No. This is the Nicetown/Tioga section of the city in North Philadelphia, Germantown is further west. The tall buildings you see are the campus of Temple Hospital.

Nice pics Cro

The only time I have ever been up that way I was on the Temple Hospital campus and I never journeyed off of it, I'll have to do more exploring up there one day. That new Temple Hospital building is gorgeous.

Most definitely not. Not even Germantown at all. "Downtown" Germantown would be, by most accounts, centered around Germantown Avenue and Chelten Avenue.

Cro, when I finally get busted please send me a book from Black and Nobel.

Okay, thanks. I'm not super familiar with the geography up that way. What neighborhood is this considered?

Thanks for the comments, all.

I'm surprised Barnes & Noble hasn't filed a copyright infringement suit about the name yet. The prison thing touches on how different from the suburban American mainstream many parts of Philly really are.

I actually spent my 21st B-day back in 98 at a Temple Pharmacy Fraternity Party, this area seems to have picked up some since those days. Thanks for sharing!

Nicetown-Tioga, dead in the center of North Philly.

I've never heard of this area. Thanks for the pics.

Side note: I think I've smoked weed out of a Black & Noble before....

Disturbing. You may be kidding but we're gonna have something renamed in 'Tour Blanche' over here, and it's right next to something called 'Tour Europe', right in the middle of old Europe that used to be so all perfectly white like a sink for so long... Definitely unrelated but it seems that it still could be misinterpreted. The 2 towers in question are small though, so they should never catch too much attention even strangely named.

Don't get hurt at the sink joke if your skin is white, so is mine and it's my joke.

That said, if any noble black lord is in charge of buildings in that neighborhood, he's got some stuff to fix.

OMG, Colday is one of the whitest people I know. I'm pretty sure you just hurt his white feelings.
