Question What is your ONE, FAVOURITE picture of your city?

I bet this is a tough question for most of you but I am so excited to see your answers...

This is my favourite photo of St. John's.

I downloaded it years ago (2009) from a forum. It is by photographer Todd Baker.

Starting to show its age a bit, but still one of the best, most complete I've seen!

edit: that shot of St John's is really good

^ That skyline shot is/was epic. I don't know which Montreal shot would be my favorite. I like the one on Wikipedia taken from Mount Royal in the winter with all the smoke on the highrises, but I won't post it and try to remember another one.

^ Great shot, Big T. I still find it strange to think... and somewhere, in all that, is an old town that puts even QC and STJs to shame. How can one city get BOTH? No fair...

Old Montreal would put Old Quebec to shame? Not sure about that, but they sure have their own style. Old Quebec is more tourist-oriented and share some similarities with Disneyland, but the setting and stock of old buildings, walls, is more impressive overall.

Quebec City is funny. Sometimes people think that structures like the gates or even the Chateau Frontenac are all from the French colonial era. In reality it's been a touristy city for a long time and even around 1900 there was a deliberate attempt to build in a romantic style. Montreal on the other hand was always the more utilitarian city. It had city walls at one point too, but they were knocked down when they were no longer needed.

Bahaha, I LOVE it!

Same thing in St. John's. I'll never forget when my cousins from Scotland were visiting. We were taking the double-decker bus tour of St. John's and the conversation went like this:

Tour guide: "The colourful houses are really a response to the weather. Newfoundlanders traditionally painted their houses in bright colours so they would be more easily visible to fishermen returning in fog."

My mother, under her breath, after gasping and giggling: "Bullshit. When I was growing up, colourful in St. John's meant your house had TWO shades of grey. All of this was part of a beautification project in the 70s."

Quoted for truth. I have NO idea why tour guides give this spill. Alternatively, another story given behind the colorful houses was the fishermen just used the leftover paints after painting their boats. But I've never seen a boat that wasn't just white. Truth is everything was grey and more grey in St. John's back in the day, whatever color the clapboard initially was.

^ Nice. I know the Manitoba Hydro Place (an ex works there) and the Fort Garry. And I can see where Portage/Main is, obviously, but I don't know the names of those buildings. Great pic!

Is this the view from Pembina Highway?

Fantastic Winnipeg shot indeed. They've got quite a skyline when seen from this angle.

I know you said just one, but I have two favorites I've taken. Here is the other from May 2011.

^ If any deserves a second posting, that's it. Wow... just wow. It simultaneously makes Toronto look large and impressive as well as quaint and peaceful. Well done. Awesome timing. You must be GLEEFUL knowing no one is ever going to get that sailboat and birds the same way again?

Reminds me of my second favourite shot of St. John's by Far East Photography:

http://www.fareastphotography.ca/PhotoGallery.html

No one is EVER going to get the fog exactly that way again.

Nicko, that is gorgeous. Reminds me of similar styles of photos from Dubai.

yes, from the holiday inn roof...that is pembina stretching along in the foreground.

osborne village is the clump of towers to the left of manitoba hydro....today the human rights museum would rise up above the two square residential buildings on the far left.

shows what an impressive urban forest winnipeg really is.
