P A R I S, Je t'aime (1)

No city oozes character like Paris, from Le Grande Boulevards and unrivalled grandeur of the right bank, to the narrow lanes, bookshops and cafes frequented by philosophers, writers and artists of the left bank. From the grim suburban concrete tower blocks, to the medieval gothic masterpieces that sit upon the Seine, there is something in Paris to capture the imagination of anybody. A true metropolis, and a city one could tire of exploring, I am thankful to have Paris as a neighbour (being only 2.5hrs from London). This is the first instalment of probably about 4 threads, so without further ado, sit back and enjoy my take on continental Europe's greatest masterpiece....

Surprisingly, most parisians seem to wear a more "down to earth" style of clothing! I was expecting something more "avant-garde/crazy"

Fantastic thread. Good mix of pics of people and pics of urbanity. I see you enjoyed too the brutal beauty of the 13th arrondissement.

I don't know where this American cliché about French comes from. There are actually more smokers in the USA than in France, and if you look closely these pics, you will notice that most of the people don't smoke.

You have to go to London to see that, they have an eccentricity that is lacking in the French clothing culture (for the best or the worst).
Despite Paris being the fashion center of the world, most of the people don't work in the fashion industry, and certainly don't wish to draw attention on themselves by the clothes they wear. And overall, classical elegance is more valued than eccentricity.

Thank you. Yes I like to explore, loved the 13th Arrondissement, very distopian in a way.

I hate to say this but I actually was surprised by the amount of smokers when I went. Can't speak for the US, but coming from the UK I think we have cut back as a nation since the last time I went to France, I thought the men especially seemed to smoke a lot.

Plenty of London favours classical elegance too you know. It depends which part of the city you are in. I find London to be a very well dressed city. Paris too, of course. Those two plus Milan are the best dressed in Europe for sure!!

You've got to be kidding. Paris has far more smokers than any American city of comparable size. Look at the smoke-filled bar/café terraces in Paris or designated smoking areas outside of workplaces should you need further evidence. Additionally, because of the larger amount of young smokers, it is much more socially acceptable to be young and smoke, than in, say, California, which pioneered anti-smoking campaigns and ordinances. Thankfully, the French are clamping down on it.

Paris in the Fall. Definitely more gray, brown and haze than when I was there in the summer. Looks like you really moved around. I like the night shots at Defense and the lines in this one:

Looking forward to the continuation.

Boring stereotype, though a third of the population still smokes indeed, which is costly to the healthcare system, they say.

Most your people look kind of gritty/old/lonely/sad/smoking or something... I guess luckier random ones were at work while you were passing those in the streets.

But a really good thread overall, you seem to have enjoyed the cityscape a lot.

With all due respect, I take photographs of whatever I find interesting. I happen to find the gritty/old/lonely/sad/smoking interesting.
