I absolutely love this building. Black is always a merit, IMO, it has a unique shape (triangular with champhered corners) uses corten steel cladding, and it just looks tough and cool!

This building is jaw dropping at night. You can see it peaking over the hills from all over metro Pittsburgh. And that corten cladding is the shit.

One of my top 10 in the world.

I just took a trip with my Dad this summer to see the Tigers play the Pirates (the Tigers lost the game

but won the series

) and I was blown away by how nice downtown was. Between the two awesome stadiums, the river walk and some really interesting architecture; I am now considering Pittsburgh as my possible new home once I graduate. While this was not my favorite downtown tower by any means (Thant honor goes to one PPG Place) there is no denying the power it exudes. Pittsburgh really has more amazing towers than any city of its size has a right to. In order of awesomeness...

-Cathedral of Learning
-One PPG Place
-The Tower at PNC Plaza (coming soon)
-Mellon Bank Center
-The Gateway Center
-Gulf Building
-Fifth Avenue Place
-US Steel Tower
-Three PNC Plaza

A personal highlight of the trip was sneaking into the top floor of the Cathedral of Learning. The views were amazing.

Each floor of the USS Tower = 1 acre. At 841 ft, it is the largest rooftop of any skyscraper on earth. Most taller skyscrapers taper or setback as the height increases. The only other skyscrapers with a large footprint (1 acre) was the original 1 & 2 world trade center buildings.

Yep. And Councilman Bill Peduto wants to turn that rooftop into a park, which I think would be awesome!

My mom used to work in that building when Marsh & McClennon's Pittsburgh offices were there. When my mom would have to go into work on a Saturday for a couple of hours and asked me if I wanted to go with, I always said yes. I think a couple of times I even asked to go in with her! That building was (and still is) awesome!!! And I would love to see a park go there at some point. Climbing 841 vertical feet to a green space would be cool.

Not my top favorite building in Pittsburgh but certainly a likeable one. It's a symbol of the city that is its home.

My first trip to Pittsburgh I made a point of laying hands on the structure. When they say 'US Steel Tower' that's exactly what they mean - that building is solid metal power.

That pic in post #4 is BAD-ASS! I meant to say that earlier but didn't, and I'm saying it again. It is BAD ASS!

I kinda wish they'd settled on a higher floor count rather than 64 floors at 841 feet. I know they lowered the total height because US Steel and the other parties involved didn't want to engage in a pissing contest with New York and Chicago. At the time, New York was building the Twin Towers, and the Sears Tower was in the planning stages I believe...

is that the building's topping out circa late 1969? Anyone remember the cartoon, Muppet Babies? There's a 1986 episode, "The Weirdo Zone," and near the beginning is footage of this building under construction.

Here's the link to that clip on youtube. The reference begins at about one minute. and runs for about 20 seconds. Toward the end of that roughly 20-second clip, you can make out the top of the Gulf Tower off to the left!

By the figures given on this website, US Steel has more floor space than the Empire State Building. This is certainly a "broad-shouldered building".
