Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo

So I went down to Buffalo for the first time in over a decade (not counting driving through it on the way to somewhere else) this past Sunday. Thankfully, I managed to pick the worst day possible. Rain, ice, and impenetrably gray skies. Kinda gloomy. Thats also why much of this thread is in black & white.

I should really go back in the summer.

Nice tour! Thanks for the pics.

Some houses are gorgeous. I like the day you had there.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

Interesting looking architecture there.

The building in the 3rd picture is quite unusual, it might be considered Romanesque Revival, but I'm not sure.

The building in the 13th photo reminds me of a typical town hall one might find in the low countries.

One of the great has-been cities of North America (sorry if that offends any Buffalonians out there). Largely misunderstood by nearby Canadians as both dead and dangerous, it's anything but.

Such great bones and such great potential. Would love to see more.

cold, grey shots but good nonetheless!

and what, no photos of the newly restored Lafayette Hotel? (you caught the corner of it in the shot with the the old AM&A's dept. store).
thanks for showing! and yes, you must go back in summer. that's when the "Queen City of the Great Lakes" truly shines!

The building in the 3rd photo

is one of only 3 "Manhattan-style" Co-Op buildings in Buffalo, called 'The Campanile' built by a Canadian architect in "Italian Renaissance Revival" style just before the stock market crash of 1929. It definitely has large units, some with 3 floors I think, approaching (if not exceeding) 3,000 SF. edit: apparently the largest unit has 8 bedrooms and 8.5 bathrooms!
Located on Buffalo's "Millionaire's Row", that is Delaware Avenue, it was a building perfectly situated for old money'd Buffalo.

The building in the 13th photo
was the old Post Office built in 1901 when Buffalo was at its peak for prominence and wealth (8th largest city in the US, hosted the Pan-American Exposition aka World's Fair). The building was restored in the early 1980s and converted into the city campus for Erie Community College.

It looks like it would probably be Italianate to me.

Romanesque looks like this.

Thanks! Buffalo calls for real winter though, none of this 3 cm of muddy snow with rain crap. Winter with snowdrifts higher than a person, and forts and tunnels snaking through 'em, like those of my youth (spent a fair bit of time in Buffalo as a kid, but all the family there has since moved on).

This is the second snow I've seen this winter.

I support Buffalo in all of its endeavors.

Gloomy, gray, and frigid... and so much fucking cooler than some bullshit place like Orlando, for instance.

This thread is way cool. I love the bleak, looming quality of late 19th century rust belt architecture in the snow.

Gotta love Buffalo, cold/snow/gray skies/and all. One of the reasons I miss Upstate is memories of fun times in Buffalo. Thanks for the tour.

Why is it necessary to bash some other city? This thread stands on its own without resorting to THIS kind of bullshit.

Perhaps someone feels a little guilty for leaving the region.

Great photos! I spent the night of Superstorm Sandy in downtown Buffalo, after busing it down from Toronto to fly out the next day from Buffalo's airport...the city seemed interesting and a place I gotta adventure sometime in the spring or summer! On my way out the next morning I saw a few of those buildings (the Electric Tower, Lafayette Hotel, another one - city hall?) and gotta get back there to get some photos! Thanks for providing!
