*Jakarta* - Respect

Every now and then I get reminded about how important it is to travel to corners of the planet that I wouldn't normally go. It's an education that one can't put a price on. Jakarta, in 12 short days over the Christmas holiday, was that place.

Jakarta is a special city; a metropolis that usually gets mentioned in relation to oil and gas or as a stopover to Bali, but for one of the world's most populated cities in one of the world's most populated countries, it remains a bit of a mystery to most people, or it did to me, at least.

To try and wrap JKT around one single word is a bit tough, but if I was to try, it'd be 'respect'. The respect the Jakartans show to each other, to visitors, to the many religions that call this sprawling megacity home is humbling. I've been to quite a few big cities in my life, and never have I felt so welcomed as an outsider or visitor as I did in Jakarta. There's a whole lot of heart here.

Wow. You're right though. For being the worlds 4th most populous country, I (and probably most Americans) know shockingly little about the place.

Thanks for the thread.

TIL: The Van Halen brothers are half indonesian.

Your photos really ooze that friendliness and respect you spoke of. It seems like a very kind, welcoming place through your photos. And you're right, Jakarta and Indonesia in general have a shockingly low international profile considering its population.

You can definitely feel the positive energy through your photos. Outstanding set -- and a good reminder to explore new places.

Really impressive set. I am guilty of having been to Jakarta but only really spending a day before moving on further into Java. For such a big city thy is no way to do it justice.

You have really captured a positive and energetic feel of the city, with some outstanding and very human people shots.

Interesting tour, as usual. I can never get over how large these cities are, because the infrastructure hasn't yet grown up with the sprawl of these cities, so a picture can't really capture the pulse. It bears a very superficial feel to a place like Manila.

BTW, giallo, when you're linking photos straight from Flickr, you don't need to make your own image tags. They come built in with the link, so it's redundant.

Ooh, a megacity we NEVER see on here. This city is a total mystery to me. Looks fascinating. Manila is in that same category for me as well.

Everybody I know who goes to 'Indo' (as they call it here) skips Jakarta entirely. Obviously they are missing something.

Not that I have to add, but fantastic photos as always. You never disappoint.

Enjoyed all these pictures of Jakarta. Very nice shots, as usual. Thanks for sharing, Andrew.

I hadn´t seen pics of Jakarta before, and it looks a great city. I see it´s a city of contrasts. The mixture of modernity and humble neighbourhoods is amazing. By the way, excellent people shots.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

Great photos!

Around here, Jakarta is a not so unfamiliar city and many people have been there. Not many people know that some 32 million people live in the metro area though (with 8 million Bandung nearby). As far as I'm concerned, it's the world's second largest city (untill the PRD or the YRD becomes a clear integrated metro area at least).

Awesome set of a place that most of my countrymen (including me) are shockingly ignorant of despite it being ever more important to us.

This thread is the most detailed and intimate impression i've ever gained of a city with an incredibly fuzzy and unfixable presence in the western mind.
