The Texas Medical Center has big plans in mind for some of the last unused real estate in the TMC district.

At last year's inaugural State of the TMC luncheon, Dr. Robert Robbins, CEO of the TMC, unveiled a grand vision of a new research campus dubbed TMC3. While dirt hasn't begun to move yet, he expects it to happen soon.

The Texas Medical Center plans to move forward with the convention center, hotel, retail and living space, Robbins told the HBJ. It plans to put out request for proposals in the coming months to get those projects started.

Robbins added that he already has the developers willing to front the initial costs for these projects, but did not elaborate on which ones specifically. He also said the Texas Medical Center will launch a philanthropic campaign to help fund the project.

Beautiful campus. Would love to work here. That, and the Exxon mobile campus. Seems like Med Center always has cranes sprouting from it. Millions of square feet must be added per year I'd imagine which is great for securing its future as the worlds largest.

Nearly all the major institutions have expansion plans either u/c or on the table. There's also a few hotels and residential proposed for or near the TMC.

Interesting proposal and if built will be an excellent addition to the Medical Center.

The Medical Center has been a positive in the midst of strengthening downturns in both the commercial and residential markets in Houston due to the crash in oil prices.

In the article McKeon is quoted as saying:

It’s been unanimously approved by our board and it’s moving very quickly,” McKeon, executive vice president, chief strategy officer and chief operating officer of the Texas Medical Center, said at an investor conference hosted by Midway, at Hotel Sorella in CityCentre.

But at the end of the article is this statement:

* Note: In a follow-up interview, McKeon said the only thing approved by the Medical Center board so far has been a change in real estate covenants that would allow for-profit companies to help develop the project.

Maybe McKeon is just so excited about the prospects he announced everything being unanimously approved in the expectation that it would be but then was forced to say that nothing has been approved other than a change in covenants that could allow it to go forward, not that it is actually approved to go forward.

A bit different message.

Texas Medical Center to develop hotel at TMC3, rest of campus still in progress
