From Saint Petersbourg to the Altai mountains

Here is a thread dedicated to the pics I took last summer during my fifth trip to Russia, from Saint Petersburg to the Altai mountains.
On this map (sorry for the mercator projection), you can see in blue the route I took :




In yellow, it's the route of this year's trip (I've just come back). Other colours are for my other trips from previous years. I've already made, here on SSP, some threads about my 2010's and my 2011's trips. Just look up my profile or my signature if you are interested.

awesome job thx -- pretty sure my next big trip will be helsinki, tallin & peter. this thread is certainly keeping up my interest. love the nightshots too.

Next part : going to Novosibirsk, largest city of Siberia, and 3rd largest of Russia with about 2 millions of inhabitants.


49- You only need some few hours to go from Saint Petersburg to Moscow by train. Here, passing in front of the Ostankino tower (540 m) :

98- To get to Barnaul from Novosibirsk, you have to take a Kazakh train operating the service between Novosobirsk and Almaty. The Kazakh trains are recognizable by their light blue colour.

Awesome thread. I'd love to go to Russia one day. The visa is a bit of a pain, but flights are super cheap from NYC, usually around $500-600. What brought you to Russia 5 times?

Actually I went there six times since I've just come back for another trip in Russia.

Well, about Russia, I just feel that, for me, it's one of the most exotic country on Earth. And I love the isolated, remote and unspoiled places, and most of Russia is about that.
Russia is so huge that visiting this country, you just feel like entering some kind of parallel universe. I think that few countries can give you this feeling of being really elsewhere and far away from home.

Man, you must have a passion of some kind for this largest country, huh.
I find some landscapes remind of those of North America.

There must be some railroad from Saint-Pétersbourg and/or Moscow to Vladivostok, quite possibly the longest of the world and surely one of the most fascinating.
Obviously, seeing your map, you went all the way along.

I'd been going through your old Russian threads from 2010/2011 and found this newer one. Keep posting. These threads are a rare taste of a very foreign and off the beaten path place.

Also, what was up with the Native American (or local dressed as such?) in Novosibirsk? Real WTF moment.

It appears that, if one is going to spend any time at all in Russia, one should at least learn the Cyrillic alphabet.

Yeah, I thought it was kinda out of place on the moment but, thinking twice, not more than it would be in the streets of Paris, London or even any North American city.
Why would Russian cities be spared by the fake ethnic street musicians phenomenon that we can see everywhere in the world ?

Learning the Cyrillic alphabet is indeed quite useful. It doesn't take more than a few hours and when you know it, you actually realize that a lot of words in Russian are the same than in French or in English.
