Miami's got a ton of stuff going up within city limits. Don't think Tampa can keep pace.

Hmmm, I'm going to say yes, but it's going to take some time. Their city populations are only about 50,000 apart, right? Tampa is 109 square miles while miami is 36 square miles, meaning that Tampa has a TON more room to grow.

My guess is that eventually Miami's 36 square miles will pretty much reach its 'capacity', and Tampa, with a land area over 3 times bigger, will excede Miami, in terms of city population.

"Will Tampa surpass Miami?"

Perhaps so, but in terms of culture and international importance, it will be a very long time, if ever, before Tampa surpasses Miami.

Well, I just think of future Tampa as a Florida version of L.A. (horizontal and spread out) and Miami as of San Francisco (compacted and vertical)

That's a weird comparo. I guess the way you said it, it makes sense, but in terms of culture...............Miami seems to be more like L.A. and Tampa more like Atlanta.

I think that it could in time. The key is that the poll is about the city limits in terms of population. Given Tampa's land area and recent propensity to annex suburban land and develop it, I think that it is inevitable that Tampa will become a "bigger" city than Miami.

And it's not like Miami is the only city in Florida experiencing inward growth these days. After today's big redevelopment proposal for some public housing in DT Tampa, there are now ~6500 units proposed to be built in just the DT area over the next few years. And this says nothing of the significant housing growth at both the University of Tampa as well as USF (the schools combined plan about 4,000 units within 10 years), which could bring in several thousand more residents within the city's juridiction...

I sure don't think it will happen any time soon, if ever... But it is a real possibility and nobody should really be all that surprised if it does happen 30-40 years from now.
