Jamaica, the island.

Pretty sure I've never seen a Jamaica thread on here before, or anywhere in the Caribbean. Here's a small sample of the island of wood and water from a trip I took this past April. Most of these shots are from Kingston but a few from Montego Bay crept in.

Essential thread. Thank you!

I grew up with high freaks here in metro Paris. We are fair connoisseurs of Hip Hop and Reggae music.
Desmond Dekker and Toots and the Maytals rocked my own teens. I've also always liked old sentimental singers like Alton Ellis and such. And the early Wailers are legendary.
Even my mom likes them.

I wish they were wealthier...

Be sure they would be if the French Caribbean islands were, cause they get a lot of respect here.

The French? Pathetic! Always obnoxious! The total opposite of the Italians! Paris? Awfully polluted! The unbearable downtown! - (basically unattractive) Carla Bruni.

Amazing shots!!! It's very rare to see pics of Jamaica (or anywhere in the Caribbean) that aren't resorts / the beach. The urban shots remind me a LOT of lower-middle class areas in South Africa, which maybe shouldn't be too surprising given the colonial history. What was the safety like walking around?

mm... Idk. I don't know what you exactly mean (though I have an idea) and I don't have an answer to anything.

We're thinking of a better fate for overseas territories. Next year will be a referendum in Nouvelle Calédonie, far away from the Caribbean, but it should be decisive when it comes to separatist movements over the French dependencies.

If they want to go independent, they will. It's their choice. If they think they still need the French Republic, it's okay as well. We'll try to take better care...

As for the French Republic, it never claimed being perfect, huh. It takes forever and the entire world to get to perfectness.

Thanks for this photo tour. Good to see urban pictures of Kingston and Montego Bay. If you have photos of the more crowded parts (markets, CBD, shopping districts) of Kingston, please post.

Nice pictures! I've been interested in seeing Kingston, and some of the better Caribbean cities, at some point when I have time.

I was wondering about the crime and safety as well. Kingston is supposedly pretty bad, like a bad inner city neighborhood in the US. I wouldn't go in a bad neighborhood in a city unless I'm familiar with the area in general, like here in Wilmington or something. I did walk around Downtown Nassau this past April, and it was safe. The police were everywhere. Downtown is the big tourist area, since the cruise ships dock there, so the police patrol constantly and make their presence known, because if the tourists leave, everyone in Nassau loses. A friend says it's the same in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.

Interesting study of relatively chaotic built environment, one observation is that nearly all the cars shown look like they are in good clean running order. Plus, there are many chicken options!

Enjoyed the thread. Interesting pics, and some of the signage was quite entertaining.

I did get a bit of a melancholy feeling when I saw this one:

Thanks for the tour.

Kingston definitely isn't geared towards tourists like other caribbean cities, in fact most tourist flights don't fly into Kingston. I was there visiting family but i will say while downtown is pretty rough. While some spots are a no-go zone even for police, uptown Kingston looks like Miami or any other place in America.

yeah my friend told me about driving into kingston neighborhoods where locals on the street with machine guns stepped to the car and his cousin was doing fast talking to get them waved through. he wasn't happy with his cousin at all about that particularly because he was with his family.
