Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. unveiled Dec. 26 a high-performance computing system three times faster than any other supercomputer in Taiwan, underscoring the nation’s high-tech expertise and cutting-edge R&D capabilities.

The supercomputer, operating in southern Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Software Technology Park, is capable of operating at 6 peta floating point operations per second (petaflops), equivalent to the computing power of around 5.4 million iPhone Xs, the firm said.

According to Hon Hai, better known as Foxconn Technology Group—the world’s largest contract electronics-maker whose customers include Apple Inc.—the system will have applications in a wide range of fields such as sports data analysis and animation imaging, and is poised to make significant contributions to the health care industry. The company said the supercomputer will be able to quickly analyze, compare and process a vast array of images and data from medical tests and samples.

By incorporating cloud computing and a variety of artificial intelligence programs, the system will provide medical professionals with the information and resources to make more accurate and effective diagnoses, the company said. DNA sequencing will take 30 minutes instead of three days and be 250 times more efficient, and surgery and radiation therapy simulations will require six minutes, as opposed to the standard 24 hours, it added.

More than 250 enterprises have set up operations at the southern Taiwan park since its launch in 2000, creating over 8,000 job opportunities and leading to NT$23.62 billion (US$794 million) in investments. Located next to the Port of Kaohsiung, the 587-hectare zone is close to Kaohsiung Exhibition Center and serviced by Kaohsiung International Airport as well as the country’s first light rail system.

Hon Hai unveils supercomputer system

Dec. 26 (CNA) Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world's largest contract electronics maker, on Tuesday unveiled a supercomputer system with a high performance computing function.

The supercomputer is located in the Kaohsiung Software Park, boasts a computing function equivalent to 5.4 million iPhone Xs and is three times faster than existing supercomputers in Taiwan, Hon Hai said.

The device is the most powerful high performance computer and most efficient supercomputer in the country, the company added.

Hon Hai said the supercomputer can be used for a wide range of applications including medical care, communications, industrial production and environmental engineering.

In addition, the newly unveiled super computer will be connected to customers by optical fiber networks operated by Asia Pacific Telecom Co., a telecom service provider and subsidiary of Hon Hai, that provides services to its customers islandwide, the manufacturing giant said.

The services provided by the supercomputer will include analysis of medical records and sports data as well as artistic and animation applications, Hon Hai said.

Lu Fang-ming (呂芳銘), chairman of Asia Pacific Telecom, said as Taiwan's market is limited in size, Hon Hai has set its sights on the global market, adding the group is expected to seek partners overseas to seize more business opportunities.

Hon Hai, an iPhone and iPad assembler for Apple Inc., is gearing up to diversify its businesses from hardware production to software development in a bid to boost its bottom line.

Shares in the company have come under pressure on the local main board in recent sessions amid concerns over weaker than expected shipments of the premium iPhones, the signature model for the 10th anniversary of the device.

On Tuesday, Hon Hai shares closed down 0.98 percent at NT$91.20 (US$2.77) on the main board.

Hon Hai launches its first HPC with focus on health

ORDINARY PEOPLE:AI medical diagnosis technology in the US can cost up to US$8,000, a prohibitive cost that Hon Hai hopes to reduce for general public access

By Lisa Wang / Staff reporter

Hon Hai Technology Group (鴻海科技集團), known as Foxconn Technology Group (富士康) overseas, yesterday launched its first high-performance computing (HPC) system applying artificial intelligence (AI) to precision medicine, sports data analysis and 3D rendering.

Early this month, Hon Hai unveiled a multi-access edge computing platform and facial recognition technology for a wide range of applications from home security to e-commerce.

The system is Hon Hai’s latest step to introduce AI and high-computing technology to everyday life, such as in precision medicine.

The supercomputer, using AI, can identify tumors and analyze genomic variations in treatment, allowing doctors to create customized healthcare plans, a company statement said.

PREVENTATIVE

“HPC system technology can be applied to a wide range of subjects. We target scientific research and preventive medicine,” Hon Hai business group president Lu Fang-ming (呂芳銘) said.

“The system is primarily used for ultra-high-definition, up to 8K, image identification and analysis,” Lu added.

The HPC system in Kaohsiung is the result of Hon Hai’s decades-long efforts in developing cloud-enabled technologies, Lu said.

The computing power of the HPC system is equal to that of 5.4 million iPhone X’s, he said.

“We want to provide ‘computing as a service,’” Lu said. “We are providing virtual machine services, different from the colocation service offered by most telecoms in Taiwan.”

Hon Hai’s HPC is the nation’s first privately run supercomputer and the company is aiming to provide more affordable services for ordinary people, Lu said.

Using AI, the system can be used to help sequence genomic data and help identify genome-caused diseases, Lu said.

“This would cost between US$6,000 and US$8,000 in the US. We hope to reduce the expense and allow the general public access,” he added.

Redfalcon Computing (睿驊電算), a subsidiary of Hon Hai, is working to develop deep-learning in X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging to identify breast and lung cancers.
