Well over 300,000 sqare feet of leasable space in Del Amo has been blocked off due to so many vacancies. This would put South Coast Plaza, the mall of malls, at #1.

Once the second phase of the Mall of America is finished, it should be #1.

No less than 5 of the top 25 in Chicago... not something to be proud of.

Although this is still the biggest "mall" out there (3.1 million square feet of retail, plus 275 restaurants):

If you added up all the shops along the Avenue, on cross streets, and within the four indoor "vertical malls" (North Bridge, Chicago Place, 900 N Michigan, Water Tower Place), it would easily surpass any shopping mall in the country.

Where is the Houston Galleria? I heard it was like the 5th largest mall in the US after the recently completed expansion. Dallas Galleria larger than Houston's....uhhh sorry but this list just doesn't seem correct to me.

At 5.3 million square feet (492,000 m2), West Edmonton Mall is the world's largest shopping mall.

Covering 48 city blocks (the size of 115 football fields) West Edmonton Mall is, in itself, a tourist destination.

20 million visitors annually.

In terms of total area, they aren't bigger than the Mall of America. The Mall of America is 4.2 million square feet, the largest enclosed shopping mall in the United States.

The Mall of America also has over 500 stores while Del Amo Shopping Center has around 360 and the South Coast Plaza about 280.

South Coast Plaza deals with larger than normal, flagship locations for both upscale retailers and national specialty stores. This combination makes for a better selection of merchandise than either Del Amo or Mall of America.

I love Del Amo Fashion Center!

Here's a small, but very nice picture from their website.

The rankings are based on leaseble space, not total space. Therefore a mall with a lot of open areas like fountains, food court seating, or theme parks, could have less leaseable space while still being larger in terms of total square footage.

Side Note: When the Lakewood Mall(#18 ) was first built, it was the largest mall in the world. Of course that was around 1960.

"Mall of America is the nation's largest retail and entertainment complex. The 4.2 million square foot complex is home to more than 520 world-class shops; Camp Snoopy, the nation's largest indoor family theme park; Underwater Adventures, a 1.2 million gallon walk-through aquarium; a 14 screen movie theater and more. The Mall opened in August of 1992 and is located in Bloomington, Minn., just minutes from downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Here are a few facts about Mall of America:
Cost to build - $650 million
Economic impact - Mall of America contributes more than $1.7 billion in economic impact activity annually to the state of Minnesota
Gross leasable space - 2.5 million square feet
Gross building area - 4.2 million square feet
Number of stores - More than 520
Sit-down restaurants - 20
Fast food restaurants - 30
Specialty food stores - 36
Nightclubs - 8
Movie screens - 14
Employees - 11,000 year-round, 13,000 during summers and holidays
Parking spaces - 12,550 on-site
Walking distance around one level - .57 miles
Total store front footage - 4.3 miles
Key attractions include Camp Snoopy, Underwater Adventures, LEGO® Imagination Center, Jillian's Hi Life Lanes, NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, and Sears."

Mall Of America site

the retail number at the top will be up 305,000 in April when IKEA opens and further when the rest of phase II is complete...
and given the proposed expansion of 2.2 million (not final... zoned for up to 5 million additional) total it will be the largest in the world.

I think it includes all the area outside the actual mall too..the other retail areas...the shopping communities around the malls....Woodfield isn't anything spectacular.....size wise.

Yeah, I was really surprised to not see Houston Galleria's 2.4 million sq. feet of 350 stores. I'm thinking this list may be a little shakey myself.

jeezus! have all of those malls between mall of america and king of prussia been built in the past 15 years? KoP was once the second largest mall. (maybe in terms of visitors? who knows ... who cares ...)

EDIT: ok -- i see what's up. KoP mall is actually comprised of two sprawling two story buildings -- this list only included the larger of the two (the plaza). from mall developer kravco's web site:

Quote:
King of Prussia Mall 2,856,132 ft

Plaza: Strawbridge's, JCPenney, Sears, Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, etc

Court/Pavilion: Macy's, Bloomingdale's, etc
franklin mills made the list? northeast philly represent!

EDIT again: i don't understand why html works some of the time, and not some of the time.
big franklin mills aerial.

at any rate, interesting post, dimondpark.
