Belgrade / Београд (part 2)

Belgrade (Београд) is the capital and largest city of Serbia in Eastern Europe. The City of Belgrade has a population of 1.2 million. These two threads focus on the brutalist architecture from the socialist Yugoslavia era. All photos taken between 12 and 15 October 2017 with the Sony RX100 (I) compact camera.

Genex Tower
The area Novi Beograd (New Belgrade) is divided into neighborhood blocks with many residential apartments, often in the brutalism style. In block 33 is the Genex Tower (official name is Western City Gate) from 1979 and 154 meters high. The building consists of two towers, an office tower and residential tower, which are connected at the top by a bridge and a restaurant that has since been closed. The office tower is not in use anymore.

Televizorke flats
The Televizorke flats are located in block 28 of Novi Beograd. The two residential apartments were built in the period 1970-1974 and the nickname comes from the windows that look like the screens of (old) televisions.

Looks like the city stood still in Soviet times. Were the hotels expensive?

I can see loads of air conditioners hung on windows, which is more related to 'murika; some bored people playing their phones, that's some global trend...

But yeah, still lots of grey concrete bulky bar buildings, stereotype of the Bolshevik legacy, it seems.

The Serbs used to be some good historic friends, but they don't seem to like us Frenchies so much since the war over there in the 1990's.
That's a pity, always bad to lose friends.

So Croatia is easier for now. Probably quite a bit less urban than this thing. It's more ancient and traditional, but their Adriatic / Mediterranean coastline is a comfortable gem.

I hope Serbia joins the EU, so we can restore our traditional friendship. I think they're a good people, basically.

Full disclosure: I am a huge fan of the Bauhaus (100th anniversary baby!) and brutalism in general. I lived in Berlin in the late 70s when the Wall was still up. I see so much in Belgrade that reminds me of what I would see when we go into East Berlin but somehow I romanticized it more in my memory. Great and thorough tour, though, and the city's setting on those two great rivers is amazing.

This is my favorite shot. I wonder if this tower complex was in my local area and it was in this condition, what would be done.
