I was channel surfing this afternoon, and caught a horse race in Dubai as part of a sports presentation, and an announcer cut away for a spotlight three-minute tour of the host city...mentioning the digging of sand offshore to create new land by the hundreds of acres, and said something like one out of every ten construction cranes worldwide are curently in Dubai...

(Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if more than half of them are now in China.)

I still dont understand why countries on the gulf make efforts to develop entire utopian cities. Its kind of cool but way to grand a scale for my comprehension. The logistics must be hell/.

Who is financing all this insanity?


A building boom of 1/4th this size would inevitably result in a huge financial crash were it to take place in any Western country. I know that the financial realities of the Middle East are quite a bit different, but how on earth do they plan to fill up all these buildings? Where is the market for this product? How large is this market? This month's Vanity Fair has a long article with great photography on the Dubai building boom, but it does not address the financial aspects at all. I'd appreciate being enlightened on teh subject.

Could someone please list the 15 tallest towers in Dubai in feet high or meters high? I think there are 3 or 4 over 1000 feet high. And where are these towers located with respect to Burj Dubai?

Are all towers on the waterfront or further back?

My other question has to do with Dubai weather. While a hot climate, does Dubai and Bahrain and Kuwait get high winds, thunderstorms, or hurricanes?

What are some typical storm force winds in Dubai, Bahrain, and Kuwait? 100 kph? 150 kph?

^^ There aren't hurricanes in that region as far as I know.

Are you talking about towers already built or planned? Keep in mind that there are a few highrise areas, one is the marina, the other is the burj dubai area (which is by far the biggest area), and there are a few more little clusters of a few towers.

hmmm...Supposedly only 6% of Dubai’s revenue comes from oil, and as for the skyline shot goes…the fact that ¾ of the buildings in the shot all seem to be in the same complex and look exactly alike, and will amount for half the finished skyline, ehhhh…kind of takes an edge off, no?

Value of Dubai Waterfront project may exceed Dh100b



The total value of the Dubai Waterfront project is expected to exceed Dh100 billion, according to study done by Nakheel Properties. "Three companies introduced their bids to Nakheel company in order to win the deal of infrastructure development of Madinat Al Arab, the heart of the Dubai Waterfront project" said Madinat Al Arab General Manager Khalid Al Huraimel. "the infrastruture work would start this year by the time the investors would invest would receive the lands they owned, while the work was under way to select the company that would undertake the development works, which will finish before the end of this year" Al Huraimel added.

Reclamation work begins on first Dubai Waterfront island
Staff Report Dubai:

Dubai Waterfront, the world's largest waterfront development and a subsidiary of Nakheel, began reclamation work on the first of seven islands to be reclaimed at the project.

The reclamation phase of the 310-hectare island marks one of the pivotal stages in the construction of the development.

This activity assumes significance as it marks the actual "water breaking" milestone. Work on the first island, worth more than $200 million, will be completed in the next 18 months, company officials said.

The entire project will take approximately six years to complete.

Khalid Al Huraimel, Chief Operating Officer of Dubai Waterfront Company, said: "The awarding of the reclamation contract is another key milestone for Dubai Waterfront, indicating the fast pace at which the project is being developed.

"This reclamation work on the first island is critical as it will pave the way for future development and reclamation work of the rest of the islands.

"We shall also start work very soon on Madinat Al Arab, the first district zone and the nucleus of the entire Dubai Waterfront development."

The contract for the reclamation work has been awarded to Jan De Nul, a leading Belgian company specialised in dredging and land reclamation.

The work on the first island of the development will be executed mainly by Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers that will transport sand offshore, approximately 20 nautical miles and ferry the sand towards the waterfront area where it will be dumped or jetted into the reclamation area.

J.P.J. De Nul, owner of Jan De Nul stated: "Dubai is witnessing a tremendous growth and it is really exciting to be involved such an ambitious and iconic project that will be a part of the legacy of this great city.

"This project represents a unique opportunity for our company and we look forward to working on this dynamic development."

More than 300 million cubic metres of sand and 12 million cubic metres of rock to protect the seven islands will be utilised for the process.

The first offshore island is about 15 per cent of the entire project, which will cover an area of approximately 2,300 hectares.

Tameer to pump in Dh1b for 91-storey tower at Marina
Gulf News
July 31, 2006


Dubai: Tameer Holding, a Sharjah-based property developer, yesterday said, it will invest Dh1 billion to build a 91-storey tower Elite Residence at Dubai Marina.

Elite Residence will grace Dubai Marina's growing skyline at the backdrop of The Palm Jumeirah and features more than a few characteristics of its neighbour The Princess Tower, which is currently one of Tameer's tallest residential projects.

"Elite Residence presents substantial benefits for the end-user; from the lone business-person to the large family. We have endeavoured to include within this building, amenities that can suit a wide range of people. The development once completed will feature all the facilities needed for comfortable, ultramodern, 21st Century living," Tameer Holding's president Omar Ayesh said in a statement.

In addition to having 76 floors of residential apartments, the new Dubai Marina based development also features four parking floors, four basements, two health clubs and a business centre. The living area has a mixture of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, 3 and 4 bedroom penthouses, and a villa with a total of 695 units that are all smart home enabled as per the individual's request.

Tameer, the maker of the Dh30 billion Al Salam City, has more than Dh40 billion worth of projects under various stages of development and planning.
