A long vacant building - about 20 years vacant - is now 100% occupied in downtown St. Louis on Market Street after receiving a $47-million renovation.

Completed in 1978, Starchitect Philip Johnson's General American Life Building has been brought back to life by The LaClede Group.

NOTE: The LaClede Group is now one of America's Top 10 gas utility companies by customers (1.6-million) and it owns LaClede Gas, Missouri Gas Energy of Kansas City and Alagasco of Birmingham. Market St. has become downtown St. Louis' energy corridor. Along the street (and just off the street) there is The LaClede Group, Peabody Energy, Ameren Energy and Foresight Energy.

Here's another view of the newly-renovated Philip Johnson building in downtown St. Louis from Citygarden, which is also along Market Street. The 6-story, 130,000 square foot building has been renovated for The LaClede (Gas) Group.

St. Louis is celebrating the opening of IKEA - the first IKEA in Missouri.

IKEA opened today in Midtown St. Louis - the heart of the city's urban core.

For IKEA, it is their 41st location in the U.S., its first store in metro St. Louis and one of only a handful of urban IKEA stores in the United States.

The $70+-million, 380,000 square foot store also provides great access to the entire St. Louis region as it centrally-located in the region.

It is four miles from downtown St. Louis and five miles from the Illinois state line.

The store is providing 300 jobs and it is near CORTEX Innovation District, Washington University Medical Center and directly across the street from St. Louis University.

See Videos HERE.

Kind of tongue-in-cheek, but that 6th picture looks like they're already in line to return stuff.

I look forward to seeing the corner of Vandventer and FPPW fully built out.

Here's an update on St. Louis' $118-million renovation of the Arcade-Wright buildings in downtown. The 18-story mixed-use, adaptive reuse building will feature apartments, retail, office and educational uses.

Called the "Gateway Campus", Webster University also is expanding their downtown presence in the building by adding classrooms and an auditorium.

The building is already 30% leased and construction is still on-going.

Nice!

I don't get it, there are like....3 St Louis forumers around here. For a city with its breadth, history, and potential, I really wish it got more attention.

I think we're fairly well represented if you look at the commenters on this thread and the amount of posts about STL on the "my city photos" page. Arch City just has the development thread on lock down.

Yep - Arch City keeps info here. The good news is there's a pretty good blogging community in St. Louis that keeps tabs on development. (shameless plug for my own nextSTL.com) It's not easy to post news/images on the website, various social media, and here.

Keep up the good work Arch City!

It seems colleges and universities around metro St. Louis are booming by adding new educational, lab, residential and athletic facilities on their campuses.

Also, developers are building lots of off-campus/near-campus housing all across the metro area.

Below are just a few renderings and photos of site work occurring on a few local college campuses.

St. Louis University, Phase II, site work underway

Although one major dorm is already under construction, site work has started on St. Louis University's 7-story Phase II dorms.

This means more cranes over the Central Corridor.

University officials announced the two projects nearly a year ago. Combined, they will accommodate more than 900 students and represent a nearly $115 million housing investment.

The building that will adjoin Griesedieck will have single and double suite-style rooms with 528 beds, a dining hall, study lounges and an outdoor plaza. Completion is scheduled for summer 2017.

Below are the latest renderings for Phase II.

St. Louis University, Phase I, under construction

The residence hall at Laclede and Spring also will have single and double suite-style rooms with a total of 450 beds. A conference room, study rooms, lounges, a chapel and a small outdoor amphitheater are part of the project.

______________________________________

Maryville University, Residence Hall, under construction

Phase I is a $20 million residence hall, the first part of a two-phase construction project.

Maryville has about 700 students living on campus in two residence halls and five apartment buildings. The new residence hall, to be built in two phases, will eventually accommodate about 445 students. Phase II will add an additional wing with student living spaces and additional lounges on each floor.

The four-story residence hall will be located where the Maryville’s softball field is currently situated and is expected to be occupied by August 2016.

Phase I will feature rooms for 228 students, a fitness center, an all-purpose room and student lounges on each of four floors. Surface parking for 300 cars will also be constructed.

______________________________________

Washington University, Rubelmann Hall, under construction

As part of the South 40 redevelopment, the hall is a 5-story, 73,000 square foot student housing facility located in the heart of the South 40 residential campus.

The first floor space will house future storefront opportunities, including a new First Year Center, and add to the existing entertainment and retail venues along the main student pathway. The remaining four stories of the building will be used for student housing accommodating 180 student beds and a 3-bedroom faculty family apartment.

Below is the South 40 residential campus. Washington University in St. Louis was voted to have among The Best Dorms in the Country.

______________________________________

St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Phase II, Mixed-Use w/Residential, under construction

The $40 million project through a combination of donor contributions and a bond issue.

The first floor will include a large dining hall and kitchen, reception area and a competition gymnasium. The second floor will have additional seating for the dining hall, meeting rooms, and an intramural gymnasium. A recreation center with a 200-meter, three-lane indoor track will be the main feature on the third floor. The student center, including a success center and student support offices, will be on the fourth floor.

The college’s second residence hall with room for 220 beds will be on the fifth through seventh floors, nearly doubling the college’s on-campus housing space.

Mercy Virtual, the world's first virtual care facility dedicated solely to telemedicine, has finally opened in St. Louis (suburban Chesterfield), along what is dubbed St. Louis' "Healthcare Highway". It is receiving international attention.

The $54-million 125,000-square-foot building will house nearly 330 physicians, nurses, researchers and support staff.

In what was originally a 235-room hotel, construction is underway for 81 two-level apartments in the building, which was built in 1923 as the DeSoto Hotel.

Vacant since 1987, the 15-story building was recently known as The Alverne. The $14-million renovation will include a restored public space, indoor parking and dozens of two-level apartments.

Each two-level apartment will have an interior staircase and elevators will stop only on the floors with apartment entrances.

A four-story apartment building planned for West Pine Boulevard is the latest residential project to pop up in St. Louis' rapidly developing central corridor.

Cornerstone Development of Clayton hopes to finish the $11 million project in the spring of 2016.

The complex will have 77 market-rate apartments. Cornerstone's project of 38 one-bedroom, 34 two-bedroom and five three-bedroom units will be aimed at luring more than undergraduates at nearby St. Louis University.
