Not development related, but pretty cool anyway.

'Ring of fire' solar eclipse comes Sunday

May 19th, 2012

Quote:
BOISE – The western United States and eastern Asia is expected to be dazzled by a solar spectacle Sunday when the moon slides across the sun creating a "ring of fire."

But scientists are cautioning viewers to either wear protective eyewear or attend planned viewing events to avoid risk of eye injury.

Fred Espenak, an eclipse expert at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said filters are needed because the ring of sunlight will be blindingly bright
I've hardly heard any coverage on this except for small excepts on news websites, which kind of surprises me -- it's the first solar eclipse visible from Boise since IIRC the one in May 1993. It's definitely one of the more fantastic solar events. We won't be able to see when the moon fully covers the sun, but it will be close -- about 90% coverage. If you miss it, no worries, there will be another in 2014, and an even better one in 2017.

Dona Larson Park and Whole Foods

I am going to be shameless and bump my construction progress photos from today because I made an effort to shoot the updates this morning and just noticed they are already a page in the past Hopefully I do not offend anyone. Peace and Love.

I had to post these. A few minutes bike ride from Broadway and at the intersection of Park Boulevard and Parkcenter Boulevard. When I see beasts like this in the downtown area I am reminded of how magical Boise is and at the same time realize that we are in their way.

That Bambi is a cute little thing.

I know it is early, and they have a few months to go, but surely there are many more bleachers yet to be assembled for the football field. These bleachers they are installing are supposed to be the old NEZ bleachers from Bronco Stadium, which had a capacity of about 1,300 and is only enough to do one side of the field.

Isn't DLP is supposed to seat about 5,000? If so, they must be installing new ones as well, because I don't think they are bringing the old SEZ bleachers over too. Aren't those supposed to be relocated to the NEZ at Bronco Stadium?

Just wondering...

Bambi was a sweet surprise. I am not really sure about all of the details surrounding DLP and the bleacher capacity.

I wonder if that is Simplot's old penthouse.

I remember reading somewhere that he had moved into a condo atop The Grove.

That was, of course, after leaving his hilltop mansion and donating it to the state.

Good pics, can't believe you got so close to the deer.

No Bambi's here, just some closeups of 1715 N 7th. Clearly a tear down. What am I basing my opinion on? 25 years of remodeling experience. Those trees someone wants to save? Three rotten black locusts (trash trees) probably infected by borers and I'll bet money on that. The one overhanging the sidewalk is a safety hazard. One large Siberian Elm (maybe American Elm) in the back which has been poorly pruned probably rendering it a hazard.

As it sits, one could not possibly make money renting it due to high property taxes and homeowner's insurance. Insurance companies are on the warpath as of late. I can't imagine an owner occupy situation either. It would be environmental folly to waste brand new resources to remodel this place.

In case you missed it, here's the Historic Preservation Commission's denial of request to demo this house: http://pdsonline.cityofboise.org/pds...04031554485090

Bonus Pic: Right down the street, how they get the permit for this? Historic Overlay probably made them do this for the permit. If I'm not mistaken, jacking the house is about $12,000.

Bonus bonus pic, quick stitched pano, sorry about the colors,

I feel quite happy and lucky that my North End house is barely outside the historic district boundaries.

I cannot believe the HP's will not allow that dump to be torn down. There are great examples of classy architecture on 23rd and 24th Streets in the historic district that replaced old historic homes too far gone to renovate.

They need to crack down on landlords who rent out homes and do not require their tenants to water and maintain the yards and trees. The tudor on the NW corner of 13th and Hays always has a huge eyesore of a front yard because they let the lawn die each year and they do not water the trees. This type of neglect should warrant a code violation in a historic district.

I hope bambi was not breakfast for the mountain lions spotted downtown on the greenbelt!

To me, the real killer was when the Cathedral of the Rockies leveled the entire block north of them. That empty lot still sticks out like the sorest of thumbs.

Minor NIMBY news.

Boise officials, residents at odds over Baggley Park changes

May 22, 2012

Read more: http://www.idahostatesman.com/2012/0...-paradise.html

Quote:
Amy Glynn loves that her house overlooks a lush city park, where kids and adults play soccer, fly kites, shoot hoops and relax under shade trees.

The mother of three thinks Baggley Park is perfect just as it is, so she was upset to hear recently that the city is preparing to install a pair of tennis courts and a sandlot volleyball court.

“Why fix something that’s not broken?” Glynn said.

The 7-acre park, which is sometimes referred to as Loggers Creek Park, is located at 1411 E. ParkCenter Blvd.

..

Neighbors also worry that the improvements will increase noise, create parking problems and bring unwanted activities from competitive young adults in a park that has two playgrounds for children 12 or younger.

“Why fix something that’s not broken?” Glynn said. Oh I dunno, it couldn't possibly be to provide more activities for people to enjoy in that beautiful setting, could it? Since when are we concerned with "competitive young adults"? Really? Young people who choose to participate in outdoor sports are a threat to our peace and security? You'd think we'd be more concerned with keeping gangs in Nampa...

Will Bike for Brews
A guide to destination beer-swilling spots

by Tara Morgan @tarabreemorgan

Every summer, Boise patios overflow with spandex-clad bikers who penguin waddle between tables in their cleats, hoisting a frothing beer in one hand and a dripping slice of pizza in the other. While some hardbodies might scoff at this calorie-neutral "will bike for beer" mentality, most others see it as pure genius. If you'd like to join your buzzed biking brethren, here are a few primo beer-swilling destinations with biking directions from downtown Boise that will assuage some of your suds and fried spuds guilt. (Spandex bodysuits optional.)

*sigh*

In only a few days from now, I'll be moving to Seattle for the summer. I'll be back in September but I'm going to miss out on the best season in Boise. To everyone: please keep uploading pictures so I can be here in spirit.

I did that quite a few years ago (Seattle as well). I thought it was going to be an amazingly fresh change, and while it was, I did get fairly homesick. I remember seeing a Northwest Magazine in line at an Albertson's and they were featuring the Shakespeare Festival on the cover. Seeing the Boise foothills on the cover really hit home.

HP says Boise to be affected by latest job cuts

May 23, 2012

Read more:http://www.idahostatesman.com/2012/0...#storylink=cpy

Quote:
Hewlett Packard Co. says Boise will be affected by the 27,000 company-wide job cuts announced Wednesday, although it's not saying how.

An HP spokesman said he has no details about how many jobs could be cut at the HP Boise campus.

"We expect some impact across every business and region," Michael Thacker told the Idaho Statesman.

The layoffs are expected to be made through the next two and a half years, ending October 2014, Thacker said.

HP Boise is one of the Treasure Valley's largest employers, with nearly 4,000 people employed at its campus at 11311 Chinden Boulevard in west Boise. About half the workers are in the Imaging and Printing Group.

Keep in touch the next three months. I would really miss not being in Boise during the summer, but Seattle could be a fun option for a little bit.
