Tech growth fueling building plans on Salt Lake City's 'Silicon Slopes'

"With the Silicon Slopes area market doing
so well, the need for additional Class A commercial space is
increasing rapidly, he said. There is currently about 800,000 square feet
of commercial development, and “that amount could conceivably double
in the next few years.”... "The Thanksgiving Point area, which had a
vacancy rate of 11.4 percent in first quarter of 2011, but was below
3 percent for the same period in 2012. The national average
commercial vacancy rate is 17 percent."

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s growing technology industry is prompting major development in the area known as ”Silicon Slopes.”

More than 500,000 square feet of commercial real estate property
is currently under consideration for development along the I-15 corridor
on the border of Salt Lake and Utah counties.

Currently home to high-profile technology firms like Adobe, eBay, IM
Flash and Microsoft, the concentrated technology hub is quickly taking
shape and bringing with it thousands of high-paying jobs and
enhancing Utah’s reputation as a sought-after locale for high
tech.

“This area is being turbo-charged by this growth in the tech sector,”
said Darin Mellott, senior research analyst for commercial real estate firm
CB Richard Ellis. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce last week ranked Utah
as the fourth fastest growing state for technology jobs, he said.

Plans unveiled for Salt Lake City’s new Glendale Library

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/54...-lake.html.csp

The Salt Lake Tribune

Construction of the long-anticipated Glendale Library is set to begin in November with an opening date set for spring 2014.

The Salt Lake City Library System released an artist’s rendering and floor plan Thursday for the 18,000-square-foot structure.

...The library was designed by Architectural Nexus with input from residents, according to Patty Steed, library associate director.

"After dozens of community meetings, presentations and workshops," Steed said in a news release, "we are excited to show the residents of the Glendale neighborhood the results of their feedback."

The city will unveil renderings of the planned Glendale Library on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sorensen Unity Center, 1383 S. 900 West...

U.S. Chamber study: Utah economy poised for major growth

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...or-growth.html

By Joey Ferguson, Deseret News

Utah was voted one of the best states for future economic prosperity due to its strong job growth and thriving export market, according to a recent report on enterprising states released Wednesday by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The state was voted one of the top 10 in the nation for long-term and short-term job growth as it experienced a 2.1 percent job growth since April 2011.

The unemployment rate in Utah dropped to 5.8 percent in March, which is more than two percentage points lower than the nation’s 8.1 percent...

Dirk Facer - Deseret News, March 29th, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's impending move to the Pac-12 will be accompanied by plenty of changes.

None, however, will be as visible on campus as the construction of a new $16 million football facility on Guardsman Way. The 57,640-square-foot complex will replace the Dee Glen Smith Center, which was refurbished in 1991.

Construction is expected to begin in December and take 12-16 months to complete.

"It's huge. We are in dire need of a new football center," said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. "We have some excellent facilities here at Utah. The football center is not one of them and that's something that needs to be updated, upgraded, redone, and we're going to do that starting in December."

The new football facility, which will be attached to the Alex Smith Strength and Conditioning Room, is going to house state-of-the-art sports medicine and athletic training space, a multipurpose dining hall, a team locker room, offices for the coaches and support staff, equipment storage, a player lounge, a Hall of Fame, a team auditorium with space for 150 athletes and coaches, plus meeting rooms for each position group with enhanced video capabilities.

"Going into the Pac-12, it's an all-out arms race," Whittingham said. "Everybody is building the bigger and better buildings, and we've got to keep up with everybody."

The new facility, he added, was the selling point in recruiting this year. Football recruits are shown a building model and drawings of what is expected to be in place well before the 2012 season.

SALT LAKE CITY — The southeast view from the newest academic
building on the University of Utah campus overlooks the grandeur of
the Wasatch Mountains and the panorama of the Salt Lake Valley —
scenery that should provide inspiration for students "to reach for the
top."...

..."Students care a lot about the environment that they are educated
in," Randall told the Deseret News. "(This building) will give us perhaps
the best facility in the United States to (teach them)."

Upon completion, the project will total 188,623 square feet on nine
levels. Built in two phases, the first phase will open for use in January
2012, while Phase II is scheduled for completion in 2013...

One thing I would personally like to see is the main street entrance
restored to it original look with the steps leading up to a main entrance
in the arch... Also I wonder if they are going to do the same thing to
the west of the 100 south entrance. There is a small part of the
original foundation exposed on the south west corner of the
building (probably a car hit it). It would look nice if they restored the
whole thing.

Downtown Updates - Public Safety Building

Following: Renderings of the future Public Safety Building in Salt Lake City. The building
will be net zero, producing as much energy as it uses.

"The goal is for the building to produce as much energy as it uses," said lead designer David Brems of GSBS
Architects. If that goal is achieved it would be Utah's first "net zero" building, a designation claimed by only a
handful of structures across the country.

The building will be headquarters for Salt Lake City's police and fire departments. It will also house the city's
Emergency Operations Center and 911 dispatch center...

"There's enough solar power on the building to run that emergency operations center if everything
else is disrupted," Brems said.

Salt Lake City Ronald McDonald House plans expansion

By Brennan Smith - The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/news/54...omano.html.csp

...The facility addition, expected to cost around $11 million to build, will increase capacity from 25 to 71 rooms, 115 to 323 beds and 19,645 to 57,608 square feet.

The location at 935 E. South Temple served 4,078 people in 2011, but the charity said space limitations forced it to turn away 522 families.

Carrie Romano, executive director for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain area, said the extension will help serve 500 more families per year...

The fancy part of the building on the left, is centered on the view corridor up 900 East. This should make a lovely visual terminus to that street!

That's good to know Old & New. So, when traveling north on 900 East, this will be a very attractive site line. I'm alway's in favor of beautiful site lines. That 's one of the formost things that makes Paris so beautiful.
