The Crystal Palace
Constructed as part of the Great Exhibition of 1851, the original Crystal Palace was a 564m long building ahead of its time, being constructed from iron and volumes of glass not seen previously.

Following the Great Exhibition, the Palace was moved from its original Hyde Park (Central London) site to Sydenham in south London to become an exhibition centre of objects from across the globe and various interests such as the first motor show. It even holds the honour of the first building with public toilets! The dominance of the building eventually led to the surrounding area taking on the name of the structure, and its legacy lives on through the local football team, railway station and surrounding neighbourhood. Unfortunately in 1936 a giant fire decimated the site and all that remains are the foundations and surrounding parkland.

Recently however a Chinese billionaire has sought to rebuild the Crystal Palace which would incorporate a hotel, conference facility, studios and galleries. The surrounding parkland would also be returned to its original Victorian appearance. Recently a tender was issued for architects from across the globe to submit their interest in the project.

I didn't realize the Battersea redevelopment had started until I came across this pic and noticed the construction activity. Great building and nice to see the project (finally) proceeding.

I just found out that 124m 39-floor Novotel tower whose core is rising around Canary Wharf.

I still like classic boxy designs when it's slender enough like this. Just wait and see for materials to the facade...

My apologies for the lack of updates as I have been exceedingly busy.

London continues to grow at a rapid rate, with the population having recently surpassed its pre-war peak of 8.6mn, and due to surpass the 9mn mark possibly before the end of the decade. London’s population has also overtaken that of New York’s; how times have changed!

As a consequence there is a rabid amount of development going on across the entire city, and it is increasingly harder to chronicle the entire spectacle. The following image of Canary Wharf and the Greenwich Peninsula shows how ridiculous things have reached; the wooden blocks represent developments that are either under construction, approved or proposed, and this isn’t touching developments around Stratford, Nine Elms, etc...

Image sourced by SE9 on skyscrapercity: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...postcount=1088

I sadly lack the time to compile a vast update, but thought it worthy to mention the redevelopment of the Greenwich Peninsula which will be home to some twenty five towers over 100m. Had it not been for the location of City Airport a short distance to the east, I could imagine the site intensity would have reached sillier proportions.

Happy New Year!

Video Link

This thread has been neglected a tad in recent months, but I thought I would take the opportunity to provide a quick run-through of the various skyscraper projects at various stages of gestation in London. Many of which I do not believe have been mentioned either on this thread or elsewhere.

A major driver for the rise in skyscraper proposals is London’s booming population: up 122,100 in the 12 months to mid-2014, and set to surpass 9 million before the end of the present decade, and 10 million before the end of the 2020’s. Further explanations include the presence of flight paths, protected sight lines, conservation areas and the inability to sprawl due to the Green Belt which is concentrating development into several areas: established centres such as Canary Wharf and the City, but also in new areas including Nine Elms, Croydon, City Road and Paddington. A lot of the content for the following has been produced by skyscrapercity forum member SE9’s intensely detailed project thread which is available to read here: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...44&postcount=1

Multi-tower projects have been grouped by the tallest project.

Lol, still too few actually under construction to ever rival Manhattan. Mm? Cause competition matters so much, people! It's an economic fundamental! I know, they taught me...
So that may be enough to force us Paris in building some more. That's fine.

^While these buildings don't beat those under construction in New York in terms of height, their designs certainly beat New York in terms of innovativeness and incorporation of green space.

All these projects amaze me. Several U.S. cities could learn from London and establish green belts preventing sprawl which they desperately need. Then they could develop their old industrial sites too since all those jobs went to China 30 years ago. I could go on and on. I can't wait to visit London some day.

I'm veryimpressed with London's development as a big city in the last 10 years! Living in a box-condo-loving city like Toronto, I fully wish that some cities of North America really learned from London.
