You can see the new visitor entrance under the main staircase. The cylinder in the middle is a skylight which illuminates one of the main rooms which has been added to Parliement during the renovations.

Quebec has done incredible work of maintaining and adding to its capital building and grounds.

I visited Quebec last summer and I realized just how stately and capital-material the Assemble Nationale grounds are. If I were a foreign tourist and you told me Quebec was the Canadian Capital, I would have believed it.

Queen's Park is kind of dumpy in comparison. Cracked asphalt and modest landscaping and sidewalks that you might find in a suburban park. In behind the legislature there is of course surface parking.

Victoria's legislature grounds are pretty nice.

Halifax has some of the worst legislature grounds in the country. The north end of the legislature grounds is still a parking lot, and it's a small site so it looks terrible. The south end was recently redone but the MLA's delayed the north side because they didn't want to lose parking. Across the street there's an empty 7 storey heritage building that the province abandoned years ago due to a humidity and mould problem. The building itself is from the 1810's, the oldest legislature in Canada, and one of the finest Georgian buildings in North America. But the standard of upkeep is really bad. Hopefully the penny-pinching culture that makes this seem normal or acceptable is on its way out.

So they destroyed all our our old Parliamentary features, such as the mace, etc. And each Canadian province donated a few things to us, from desks, to maces, to the Speaker's chair, etc. And they also based the entire design of our hideous legislature on an actually gorgeous building from the other side the country, again, to bring us together... Vancouver City Hall.

So whoever the fuck made our legislature created it after looking at this:

on that note, the grounds of the Quebec legislature is more stately than that of parilament hill. I love the grandeur of parliament hill, but it could desperately use some major landscaping.. it is so baron and stark with just an unattractive paved driveway leading to the front door.

Yes, I edited my post because I remembered about the Newfoundland legislature grounds.

I am talking most specifically about the grounds themselves. The buildings are all from different eras and all look different but there isn't really a good excuse for the grounds to be shabby.

The Halifax one is particularly bad because there's such a disconnect between the landmark status of the building (Canada's oldest legislature) and the grounds (ugly parking lot). There's a statue in the middle of the parking lot too. It's not on the outskirts of town either, but rather in the middle of the city, in what could be a very nice area.

Part of the problem was there was so much neglect from about 1940-2010 that now a lot of old landmarks need to be completely overhauled. 1990-2005 in particular was a kind of urban dark age.

It's an interesting contrast to the other provincial capitals. It's practical and just a normal-looking workplace that probably doesn't cost the government that much to maintain. The territories are the only other part of Canada with post-war legislatures. The other legislatures are comparatively gigantic, high-maintenance showpiece buildings on huge properties on some of the most valuable real estate of their respective cities

Good commentary. NL's provincial legislature, to my mind, embodies the national state of mind back in 1960. A sort of cautious optimism... ready to be bold and forward thinking, but in a restrained way and on a somewhat modest scale.
