The government is seeing big ROI on the Hollywood tax credits, and it’s expected to be a massive year for film production here. This could honestly be our first boom industry lol.
Where is the Netflix studio? There hasn’t been much out there on this.

Since we are oo the topic of movies in Winnipeg, is Channel Zero filming another season of their horror series here this year?

It's exciting to see that Winnipeg embraces modern industries

In Point Douglas. I'm not sure if it's started construction yet or still in planning.

It's one of the few subsidized industries the PCs have actually lauded and embraced. The subsidies are seeing a huge ROI in terms outside dollars coming in, tourism, job creation, etc.

We've had these subsidies for quite a long time now, but around 5 years ago some were questioning if it was all worth it. Then about 2 years ago our friends in Saskatchewan ended all their film production subsidies, and Manitoba saw a heap of new work coming over. It's paid dividends for us.

Our current gov is all about the bottom line, and I've heard Pallister likes what he's seeing so much their exploring expanding tax breaks, or at least relaxing certain rules that are causing some challenges for companies. Apparently sometimes there's issues with the subsidies being tied to using local union workers (I assume an NDP caveat), but there's in many areas there just isn't people here with the skills – such as director's assistant – that hollywood productions need, so they often pay through back channels. That being said they're usually more than happy using local union workers for most positions, but some of the higher up creative ones, they want to use their own people – which makes complete sense.

Absolutely true IMO. Pallister has surprised and delighted me with his support of film industry subsidies, but the positive effects you mention are real and immediate. New film and TV production in Manitoba seems to be announced all the time.

Meantime large scale film and TV production in Saskatchewan is almost non-existent. There is some noise the government is looking to sell off the building in Regina it turned into a production facility, and a local sound production company has closed it's doors and sold it's equipment.

It really hurts the creative people who wanted to use their talents in their home province, but discussion on re-establishing a form of tax credit is often met with claims that Sask. taxpayer money was simply being "given away" to foreign film companies (to buy them hot tubs, as one poster claimed).

Would the film and TV production industry be going through an upswing regardless of the province's efforts? The industry boomed here in the late 90s and early 00s, receded drastically in the late 00s and has been picking up steam again lately. Perhaps not coincidentally, the Canadian dollar was low during the busy times, and high when business dried up.

This is what a lot of people were asking ~5 years ago. But when Saskatchewan ended theirs (which were almost identical to ours) and ALL the work came here, it was clear the tax breaks were a dominant factor.

For sure the dollar helps, but there's also lots of states where labour is cheap, unions aren't strong (or existent) and their closer to the production companies. The tax breaks make a huge difference.

On that note, because the breaks are from the provincial government, it's not just Winnipeg reaping the benefits:

Yes I believe the Manitoba tax credits are especially generous for projects filming in rural areas.

As financially positive as the film tax credits are to the economy, I personally feel the added "sizzle" of having an active film industry in the province provides an advantage that is less quantifiable but just as important as the $$. What a great way to raise eyebrows and attract attention when trying to court investors in the province, when we are able to point to popular shows and movies and say they were filmed here. It also (hopefully) mitigates some of the "nothing exciting happens in Manitoba" dirge that rises every once in a while.

Totally agree. It's this same intangible thing that drives me nuts about the city/hydro just putting up unpainted steel poles and street lights in our signature neighbourhoods. Looks horrible to have those in areas like Osbone, Exchange, etc. where the other light posts are black – looks horrible.

When I picture great cities like Montreal I think of all the black "rod iron"-esque lights and street furniture, with the nice red Montreal logo on all the street signs. Here, Bridgwater treats lights better than some of our signature districts.

EDIT: sorry that was a bit of a tangent

Are you talking about Saskatchewan Production Studios where all the inside shots for Corner Gas were filmed, as I recall they were done somewhere in Regina and not in the town of Rouleau where the exterior set was.

Well I can tell you Manitoba Film Studios on Gomez (Waterfront North) is currently full and that’s 40,000 ft... Another 10,000ft on Higgins in the same complex is working out as a great 2nd stage. The tax credits are driving production in Winnipeg as Toronto is at capacity. Manitobafilmstudios.com
