The Leg very much is relevant to this thread I feel and discussing the hopes for it's rehab is justified. Brian P isn't big on some projects and I seem to remember the project being in the in the $130-$150 million range. I would assume a slow phased approach would be taken over maybe 5-10 years to cushion the costs.

It's ironic that if the dance studio parents were so concerned about their kids getting into the building safely and not having to cross a street to do so, they should have realized the problem was caused by how non pedestrian-friendly the area is and advocated some traffic calming. Instead they wanted to do the opposite, remove pedestrian space and hand more of it over to cars. It's now more dangerous for everyone. People in this city are totally brainwashed into car culture and it's going to take LOTS of work to undo that.

Maybe 4 SUV’s can fit in that space, each there to pick up one kid from a class of 20 all getting out at the same time. This won’t solve a drop off/pickup problem.

Did Bellamy park his car there with the door open waiting for a stroller to go by?

I heard he hired actors to walk down the street in both directions to make it *look* like this sidewalk is too narrow. That's Big Urbanism for you.

Yes, it's not too bad. There is enough room if you are careful. It would be much better if there wasn't a curb.

Yup. People across downtown have adjusted to decades of prioritizing vehicles over pedestrians...by staying away.

The motto of every great city...The sidewalks are wide enough if you are careful.

In China they're more like the slow lanes of major thoroughfares...people think of the roads as great places to walk. You guys don't know how good you've got it.

Toronto's sidewalks are narrow as well - probably more so than Winnipeg's on the whole, although I have no statistics on that. There's a spot on Avenue Road in Yorkville, right across the road from me, where pedestrians have had to go single file for the 33 years I've lived here - it might be half the width of that bit of Main Street. (Finally, a condo is about to go in so it might be rectified, but I'll sort of miss it - it's like a revolving door ... a rare occasion where you're forced to interact and coordinate with strangers).

But....bad things only ever happen in Winnipeg!! Oh, wait....in Toronto it's smart, here it's a civic embarrassment that makes me want to hide under my bed and scream into a pillow. :roll eyes:

On the plus side for roads and infrastructure, apparently the Jubilee underpass reconstruction is done early and under budget. That's two big road projects in the city that can make that claim. Hope they continue that trend!
