My guess would be an ethnic-type grocery store to meet the needs of our growing international population in the south end.

Obviously. I was wondering if anyone knew more specifics. There are quite a few Asian groceries, a few Filipino, a couple of Halal, a few spice markets.

The signs on the 25th & Albert store say the food area of that store will be closing but the Pharmacy will remain open.

Any ideas what will become of that place? How would Co-op continue to run a pharmacy out of there if another tennant comes along?

I am assuming they control the lease that they assumed from Sobeys. It's across the street from a senior residence so probably a decent business.

I never thought of that. It would be a good location for a Co-Op hardware store considering there is only Lowes, and to a lesser degree Canadian Tire and Walmart, in the south end. I doubt it would be large enough for their lumber component, unless they forego that and make it more like a Home Hardware-type store.

Too bad that huge empty lot is on the other side of the strip mall from Co-op.

Ideally it would be nice to see the Co-op store and both strip malls to the south get torn down and redeveloped (including the former ESSO land) for perhaps condos, a hotel, or retail. This probably would never happen, and certainly not during the present economic slowdown.

Trivia time: The strip mall (with Robin's Donuts, etc) has to be at least 50 years old, and the smaller strip mall next to it (with Western Pizza) is probably older yet. The smaller strip mall was originally the Supermatic Car Wash (which had a great neon sign). There was also a small walk-up ice cream shop called Pink Pony at the front of the car wash. That portion of the building was torn down years ago. In the '60's, sometimes my friends and I would ride our bikes there to get a cheap five cent soft ice cream cone.

And speaking of the Co-op store, as everyone knows it was originally a Safeway store. This was not the first Safeway store on that property. The first one was torn down to make way for the bigger store, which was later enlarged slightly to incorporate a new facade to hide its mid-century architecture. Along with the original Safeway, there was a walk-up Dairy Queen on the corner (Albert & 25th) identical to the one that still exists in Saskatoon on 8th Street East.

Work on the Costco Liquor store addition is progressing. It is not clear if it will have a direct entrance to the main store.

Cornwall Centre Changes

Just noticed American Eagle has hoarding up over it today. Anybody know if it's relocating, renovating or closing?

Noticed a section of the Northgate Mall parking lot is fenced off near the main entrance off Albert St. Anyone have any idea of what it could be? Original Joes? Yet another Sobey's Liquor?

Did you, or someone else, mention previously that there will be yet another Sobey's Liquor on the Victoria Square parking lot as well? (making it four Sobey's Liquors).
