They had a big fundraising gala last night. An investment banker that lived here for a while and fell in love with the city donated $2 million as a thank you to the city. This thing is going to be a jewel, unique in Canada frankly.

I agree, yet another unique attraction for the city. At some point the rest of the country will glance in our direction and utter a surprised "when did THAT happen?" when they see all the fantastic and unique things to see and do here. Of course, other travel magazines and blogs have already noticed, but when so many people are content to stick with the "cold and mosquitoes" stereotype of Winnipeg, that are bound to be shocked.

It's like they are building a replica of the Monument to the Third International.

I was concerned (wondering) if the thin looking roof in the renders would turn into a thick steel roof. But it's ETFE (plastic fabric) and cables. Awesome!

Any more progress on the site currently?

I realized how ambitious this project is. It reminds me of Winnipeg's glory days in the early 20th century. Would this project be a piece of cake for Winnipeg back then?

Hopefully this project will attract global attention once finished.

Global attention seems a bit unlikely... CMHR was arguably much more ambitious and barely registered on the global scale which isn't all that surprising given that architecturally bold museums have become fairly common.

But even if we don't get a ton of external attention beyond a NY Times article and a mention in Travel + Leisure, it's still a great addition to the list of amenities in this city and it will be a wonderful place to visit.

That photo is something else. Looks like it's up north with the shorter trees and different colours. Just perspective though. Those are big pine trees.
