The installation of 10,180 terra cotta-clad "curtainwall panels" on the massive One Vanderbilt has provided moments of interest to those of us amateur supervisors monitoring the building's progress. An example of that is this series of photos, culled from 115(!) cellphone pics I took to provide a little slice of construction life.

What I assumed to be a fairly routine exercise -- lifting and installing a pre-fab section of window -- turned into something more. Once I saw that the rooftop crane was hoisting the two-window segment up, up, up, beyond the entire eastward-facing facade, I knew something else was up. Sure enough, the usual group of about 5 or 6 workers, waiting to grab the flying windows, were gathered on two floors -- in the southwest corner.

So, the S.O.P. was to lift the material over 1,000 feet in the air, turn the entire crane cab 180° around, swing the windows to the other side of the building, lower them down a few hundred feet, and carefully place them within reach of the construction workers. All in a day's work! . . .

That shot from Lisa Nixon is just incredible. How lucky did she get with that cloud formation!

I am dating myself here but, every time I see pics if the crown being built I go back to my childhood days, playing with my wooden box set of "Erector Set," building stuff. The crown looks like some of my buildings when i would push them to an angle by accident, then keep putting vertical and horizontal stuff on them. If I only knew that decades later a beauty of a skyscraper in New York would be topped in this fashion!

I am anxious, as stated before, to see how this crown completes such a beautiful tower.

I'm also liking what the angled beams bring to the crown. Nice touch.

^Thanks TK2001. Great post!

Anyone know how much of the crown will be lit from within? This could be the most futuristic looking tower at night, depending on the lighting. Exciting Times in New York City.

Renders have shown the entire crown lit up

This render definitely shows the current design of the building because it has the more chunky crown due to the 100 foot height cut to 1,401 and it shows the mechanical cladding. Some is on the West face of the cown

^Thanks for the Lighting Post

The basic night lighting will probably take several renditions to get right. Then the possibilities are endless. I see this crown becoming much admired especially if the lighting is used to the hilt. Even if it stays very conservative it will be a stunner.
