Regina Wishlist 2008

Here you can list what you really want to see built or happen in regina. Ill start us off with my small list:

New downtown tower 30-37 floors.

Get rid of downtown rail yards

New Hotel ( one that actually fits in with the downtown. Unlike Broad st. suburbia hotel. )

Neighbourhood densification. 2000 people/km sq. here we come!!

LRT or BRT

Grocery Store in NC

Now what would you like to see??...

Perhaps I am the only one who doesn't mind the Wingate. Yes, it's nothing unique or awe inspiring, but at least it fronts the sidewalk correctly and is urban in that sense. I'll agree the design itself leaves a lot to be desired, but still I feel it is a welcome addition.

As for the list itself, guarentee that the railyards will be moving, and on top of that a visionary plan which will lay out the best plan for the area. This plan should also incorporate a vision for how the Warehouse district and the downtown may be linked and feed off one another.

New streetscaping, that is new benches, new bus shelters, new garbage cans, new lighting, more planting of trees. Tree Victoria AVe, Broad Street, Albert Street and Sask. Drive. Tree, Tree, Tree!!!!

Initiate process of implementing the "Core Plan."

New 12 or so store condo unit in the Cathedral area along 13th Avenue, where a former gas station once stood.

Leader building plan to be secured and fully functioning within the year, which includes the grocery store.

Hockey rink at the U of R...........but not to be built on one of the existing fields. Please!!! Build it east of the turf field!!

An obvious decrease in the vacant retail spaces in downtown Regina.

At least one new condo building in downtown Regina (read: something other than a conversion)

SPM to make better use of all their parking lots they own in downtown Regina.

Interesting you bring up the old gas station on 13th. I was thinking in the mean time, before they develop the land, It would be a great place to have those large recyclying binns like they have in the mall parking lots. It would fit perfectly in that corner there. And very easy for people to go take there recycling over to the binns.

I would also like to know who voted no for a new hotel. I would like to know the reasons for why people vote no. i voted yes because for the summer months and when agribition is in town and when the arabian horse show is in town all the hotels are booked solid for almost two weeks straight. And they are booked solid through the summer months. How would it not be viable for a new hotel in downtown.

Cleaning up after the gas stations is still very expensive, and requires extensive work. This is apparent with how long its taken them to clean up the Shell station at 23rd and HIllsdale. Apparently the ones on Albert Streets are actually even more contaminated.

I realize that the lot on 13th won't be rehabilitated anytime soon, so in the meantime would make a nice pocket park.

Too many sleepless nights, so official confirmation and a stunning proposal from Harvard Developments Inc. to house a division of Shell Oil would be appreciated

Regina needs a Downtown movie theater badly, definitely would like to see that.

Seems like your transit service needs an update as well. Better service would provide an incentive to live downtown and would support dense development and responsible land use throughout the city.

Best of luck in 2008

Couldn't agree more with regards to the movie theatre.

Transit does need an overhaul, travel time should not be as long as it is.

Best wishes to Saskatoon in 2008 as well. Hopefully Cameco comes to their senses and moves downtown.

My 'regina' wishlist:

-Much rumoured Hill Family proposal for new downtown tower becomes a reality (better than 90% chance from what I hear)....hopefully on Albert St like my source originally stated.

-Rumoured hotel and convention centre development for the railyards as well as condo/retail development for same location.

-Movie Theatre downtown

-5 thousand permanent seats in the northendzone of Taylor Field and a new facility that'll house a new dressingroom/store/administration/therapies/player lounge in the south endzone of Taylor Field. Also more reno's to the East side grandstand

-More greening of Broad St and Saskatchewan Dr.

^ a beautification project (greenery, decorative lighting etc) would spruce up Broad St and Sask Dr and compliment the redevelopment going on there. Might drive away some of the unsavory characters around there too.

Bylaw: No parking lots fronting sidewalk/street (would have to be redtricted to the boundaries of downtown, anything else would be pure fantasy)

This is really off topic, but.... YoungRegina, you say that you are 14, right? Why are you not in school? You seem to be posting a lot during school hours. Just an observation.

Ill keep it limited to my top 3:

1. Sports bar and/or brew pub
2. More residential
3. Green roofs

(this is assuming the grocery store in the Leader building happens, if not then that moves to #2)

EDIT: These are specific to downtown

I was in Regina quite a few years ago. As I recall there was a restaurant/drinking establishment just across Wascana Boulevard(???) from the University. Is it still there? It had a log cabin ambiance to it. Are there any other places nearby that are popular for the student crowd?
