I have sent them a message asking just that. If they actually respond, I will post the reply here.

That's good news. The Keg will be the main floor tenant, 14 stories total (I think that's the same as before), and construction will restart this fall.

I'm assuming The Keg will be moving from their current location on Garry St which will free up that location for a new restaurant to move in.

The owner of the keg was the developer who declared bankruptcy. I guess his real estate company was kept separate from the restaurant.

I was actually hoping the keg would stay. I love the atmosphere of the old one. It’s the only keg I go to. New one will be a big bland box like the suburban ones. He wanted to be closer to the arena.

I agree. I love the old place as well.
Regardless, a new place will do well also.
Having been the original developer, I wonder if he would have a bad taste in his mouth so to speak, to still move there?

So this is the reply I received to my query about preserving the original design:

Thank you for your message and your support for the project!

Rest assured, we are carefully reviewing all aspects of the design to ensure it meets the project’s goals and objectives. We appreciate your concern and will prioritize preserving the essence of the original design, including the brick centrepiece, where applicable.

We’re committed to delivering a product that honors the vision set forth by the original team, while pivoting where needed to stay on time and on budget.

Have a great day!

I think these lads are new to the game, so they don't have much of a reputation as of yet. We shall see if they stick to maintaining the original design or if it turns to dogshit.

What a rubbish reply. Vague, non-committal and condescending. "Have a great day!" Alrighty then...

For me, I didn't find it all that condescending, but indeed vague and non-committal.

I appreciate that they are young and new to the game, and do give them credit for taking this on. With that said, I really don't want them to fuck it up so bad that it becomes more of a blight on the streetscape.

I'll reserve judgement until designs are finalised.

^ the original design of this building resulted in the original developer declaring bankruptcy (IIRC).

I think we would be very naïve to assume that the design will be remaining the same to make this building viable the second go around.

Like it or not, brick costs extra money compared to the other available exterior finishes. It's low hanging fruit in a value-engineering exercise and will likely be one of the first items to be scaled back.

I will play the naive card and assume the new owners have more money lol

What was the plan for the exposed areas of the precast concrete, leave bare? Or covered with some type of coating?

This one shows the sides. Maybe they're white or something and not bare.

Maybe it would work if they just went up a couple floors with brick and changed the rest with a more affordable option. This way at least at street level you get the nice character without breaking the bank.

That's what I thought they were implying with their response, so maybe that's their plan? I know it's not what many would like but IMO it would be better than no brick, or no building at all.

Apologies, I'm sure this has been explained a thousand times over, but exactly is 'affordable housing'? Are we talking Manitoba Housing ghetto or something completely different?
