As I concur "Family restaurants" are the worst. The phrase Jack of All Trades, Master of None springs to mind but old people love 'em which is why they stay in business... How do I know? It was my 97 year old grandma's favorite chain besides Humpty's and this from a woman who admitted she always hated cooking. So you know she loves a banal hospital grade warmed mashed potato with gravy and turkey dinner...
Yes, Shitty's does have a vast appeal to seniors.

To quote The Simpson's and Doughy's Pizza.

Lisa: But Doughy's has terrible pizza!
Homer: Yeah but there's two of em!

Never underestimate the value for dollar factor. Hence why greasy spoons stay in business and casino buffets. Having spent 6 years of my life working in a casino I can tell you NEVER order the buffet. Even when they gave the staff the unsellable leftovers people would often reject it because even if you don't pay financially. Well you know... Then again, I Can't say I don't enjoy myself a Royal Pizza "steak special" now and again... Or the odd 3 AM Big Mac attack, though once I pushed past 35 that craving has all but disappeared...

The worst out were WAS Buffet World but that has since gone out of business due to lawsuits and shady ownership. Now that mantle I think falls to Buffet Royale where trash pay $29.99 to guzzle from dirty chocolate fountain and eat as much improperly chilled shellfish they can handle before the Red Tide poisoning sets in..

Calgary had a Chinese food buffet I ate at as a kid called Foody Goody. It was shut down for serving mouse meat I think. I’ve had some suspect ‘ginger beef’ over the years and wonder what I’ve actually ingested.

Edit: looks like there’s still one of them in Winnipeg according to Google. Reviews are about what you’r expect:

More renders of Edmonton's... half, maybe quarter hearted attempt at something from Amsterdam... named after a city in England.

I give you, yet again, Manchester Square. Currently under construction, meaning that these images are best case outcomes for this project. It's somehow in the inner city.

God bless Edmonton! As much attention as Laval gets I think Edmonton gives it a run for its money.

In spite of how tacky that development is, it might be an improvement from what was there before.

Edmonton is kind of like the Jersey city of Alberta.

Wow... that is horrible! I had to do a search to see if I could learn a little more about it and found this article, which includes some other similarly poor cases of façadism: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/real...ticle32258867/

There is an equally bad (or perhaps worse) case in Halifax that was done in the 1980s. On the site of the once grand St. Paul's Parish Hall, they built this 'cube' that kinda contains small reconfigured parts of the façade of the old building. Basically the new building mostly conceals what little is left of the old one, a token effort at best, and a massive failure at worst.

The original building:

What is there now:

When looking at these façade projects, it makes me wonder if any of our current new buildings will have their façades kept as part of new construction in 100 years or so...

Oh that Edmonton one is a classic. It reminds me of the set of a Western movie with the gratuitous paper-thin facade at the top.

That is horrendous. Why even bother preserving any of it? Or for that matter why did they choose to build this shite specifically on top of that Parish Hall? It's not even a skyscraper. Just basically the same volume with an office building swallowing what was there originally. Horrid. The 80's bathroom tile columns add insult to injury.
