It may happen later than some had predicted (some were saying as early as 2050) but global population growth is inevitably going to level off significantly.

As prosperity continues to increase in almost all developed countries and women there become increasingly educated their emigration and birth rates will continue to plummet.

The transfer of population from the developing to the developed world is likely to slow down considerably.

I don't what that means for Canadian immigration though, as to whether we should reduce our dependency on immigration and make Japan-style adjustments to our society and economy when we still can, or if we should "get while the gettin's good" and try and take in as many good immigrants as possible before the pool starts to dry up.

The robotics/AI revolution is coming, while Canada has plenty of room to grow, it doesn't NEED to, if anything we should continue to let in immigrants but at a much lower rate to target only the cream of the crop.

If we go with your assessment, then the main reasons we are continuing with high immigration levels (and even proposing to increase them) are:

- increasing the domestic consumer base for corporations

and

- temporarily providing either cheaper labour or a depressor effect on wages for corporations, until such time as our unskilled labour needs aren't as great

Both of which are very short-term reasons, and totally oblivious to the longer term effects of all of this.

It’s clear that screening is inadequate. It’s also time that shadow lending needs to be clamped down on.

I realize you are joking but the type of perspective you are alluding to was in decline by the 1960's, and was considered gauche by average Canadians in the 1990's. There are still points to be scored against it I guess even though the bulk of people who think like this are small town seniors in their 80's.

I can easily imagine somebody in Canada reading an article about fentanyl dealers laundering millions of dollars and then getting racism as the "takeaway" message because of Chinese names or personal details. I know lots of people like this. This is an extremely warped way of looking at the world that gets in the way of any real understanding of the issues. Racism is nowhere near the primary factor or concern related to drug dealing or money laundering in BC.

To flip the comparison around, imagine if the newspaper coverage of Al Capone in 1930's Chicago were split largely between articles on how people with Italian ancestry are disproportionately targeted by police and others about how there's no crime issue anyway and people who think there is are probably racist.

That's true for most of the world with one enormous, elephant-in-the-room sized exception. The UN predicts that Africa's population will double between now and 2050 and double again from 2050 and 2100. The population of sub-Saharan Africa is projected at 4 billion by the end of the century, as opposed to 1 billion today. Nigeria will be closing in on China in population by then. So I wouldn't think that we've heard the end of immigration pressure, particularly in Europe.

^Yes, and the Muslim world, which includes large chunks of Africa of course, has a very high birth rate. I have a hard time imagining a scenario where that's going to change, at least in the short term.

And it's not just the Middle East and Africa, there are Western European countries where it is entirely possible that Muslims will outnumber Christians, Jews and atheists in the near future.

World population will undoubtedly level-off but global demographics will likely look very different.

PEW Research

Discussions on birth rates are always fascinating. Many have already broached several entirely valid reasons why this has occurred in the West. But when you get right down to it, if you don't want to bring a life into this world (or two or three), doesn't it suggest a much deeper societal problem, perhaps one that people aren't necessarily even conscious of? This is, after all, what happens to civilisations as they regress...

The Family Compact never really went away. Canada's biggest get rich quick scheme has been built on screwing over the working class and immigrants by making them purchase local services and marginal land at inflated prices.

Here's a great example of someone who is not fit to immigrate to Canada:

A Ferrari driver who pleaded guilty to speeding across a Vancouver bridge at more than 150 km/h over the limit put on a mask, sunglasses and hat as he left the courthouse and refused to answer questions.

Yihao Wang, 22, appeared in a North Vancouver provincial court on Tuesday. He spoke only once, answering “yes” when the judge asked if he understood his guilty plea. Before exiting the building, Wang obscured his face with a black surgical mask, large aviator-style sunglasses, and a black ball cap...

....Police said Wang’s driving record could factor into his sentencing. Court records show a number of driving and speed-related offences have been brought against an individual with the same name and birth year.

In 2016, Wang was nabbed speeding on the same bridge, that time in a Mercedes sedan.

The West Vancouver Police Department said he was clocked at 126 kilometres per hour. He did not dispute that ticket, which was issued by the same officer who pulled him over in the Ferrari in July....

LOL... seriously? Talk about the idea of "saving face"...

Can't the court ask him to take it off?

In the courthouse, yes. Outside of it as he is leaving, no. Often defendants have something covering their face. It's not uncommon here for criminals to pull their shirts over their heads like they're the Great Cornholio, it can be a bit funny to see sometimes though their crimes are serious. Another common thing is to wear a hoodie and pull the hood over and tie it up tight so only a small hole is left to see out of.

Our system considers people innocent until proven guilty, so if your face is captured and spread but you're later found innocent, it can still be detrimental to your future endeavors, which is why some people try to avoid being visible when going to/from notable court cases.

Wang could be a multi-generational Chinese-Canadian descendant of people who built the transcontinental railway over 120 years ago, though with his first name, that's highly unlikely.

Do we also have any idea of whether a Canadian-born individual or immigrant individual is more likely to do this of thing, anyway?

It's just that if perhaps we see an immigrant engage in this kind of law-breaking, people are more likely to attribute it to them being "an immigrant" or whatever habits reflect badly on "immigrants", as opposed to if non-immigrants do it.

The tottering governments of Africa can barely deal with the demands of the current populations, much less a quadrupling of them. I feel that Africa will go one of two ways - either they will remake themselves in the fashion of China (which I consider unlikely given the issues with governance), or there will be very bloody wars on that continent the next few decades.

Court forcing him to take it off though, a little out of bounds there. He wasn't wearing the mask in court. So the courts are able to identify him.
