Every time I listen to Ryan Smith try to explain how this DC renovation is going to work, I get worried. He doesn't ever really answer the question, but uses a bunch of buzzwords (to be fair, that's who he is). Listened to the 32 thoughts podcast interview and he even admits to dancing around the question because the answer is always changing. We don't have a lot of time to change solutions. Fingers crossed

Hear me out...

What if... the church and Ryan Smith traded properties and SEG built a new arena on Main Street in the empty parking lot on the corner of Main and 400 S. It's basically shovel ready! TRAX is already there. A West Temple station is proposed on 400 S.

A continuation of the Entertainment District could be built, including a replacement Sheraton hotel on the block immediately west. Those two blocks are extremely underutilized.

And, if part of Main Street is ever closed to vehicles, it would be prime for a bookend closure from South Temple to 400 or 500 South.

The church would end up with the Delta Center block and they're patient enough that they would be fine waiting for SEG to vacate the block.

SEG doesn't own the Delta Center block. Salt Lake City does.

There's a lot of damn good reasons NBA specific arenas do not get renovated to support NHL. You've got a fundamental problem in the foundation dimensions and it's very hard and costly to rework, you basically end up tearing it down anyway. I haven't seen a single study or assessment revealed publicly on what it would take to make the DC work for hockey but that was discussed in Phoenix years ago and I believe the price was higher than a completely new arena.

And the church owns SLC, so don't they pretty much already own it?

A trade could still be worked out for the same swap of the two blocks.

I think we all like the Newhouse block idea in theory. The biggest problem there is that it would be bad for the Gateway. I am sure Vestar has said as much in these stakeholder conversations.

You're thinking of the Utah legislature, not Salt Lake City.

Then that makes this even harder right?

Newhouse block would be awesome, but it doesn’t qualify for the state funding bill that requires the new arena be located closer to the existing DC

Utah showed out for the team introduction at the DC tonight. Let's get a team name, ryan. We can't go into the season as generic Utah Hockey club

I'd take that over a lot of the names listed, tho.

To be fair, I agree. As a permanent name. As a temporary placeholder name, hard pass.

Of the 8 that have been listed, I'd rank it like this:

Outlaws
Mammoth (growing on me)
Yeti(s)
Utah Hockey Club
Blizzard
Venom
Fury
Ice

I remembered tonight why I bring earplugs to events like this. Killer excitement, odd ending, but if attendees weren’t bought in before, they’re most likely converts now.

Agreed.

I lived in Northern Virginia for 15 years, recently moved back to Utah. When the Washington Commanders retired their original name, they went two full seasons known as the Washington Football Team and kept the original colors while they rebranded.

At first, we fans didn't like it and thought it was too soccer-ish. Probably about a year later, I was surprised to see how many fell in love with the unique aspect of the name, myself included, and wanted to keep the "Football Team" permanently.

Then came the "Commanders" announcement, and a lot of fans hated that.

I know making fans of sports teams happy is nearly impossible, and not everyone will like whatever name is eventually chosen.

Golden Eagles would be awesome, but as has been pointed out, we likely couldn't use "Golden" alongside Vegas. I think Utah Hockey Club is a fantastic name. Again, very unique and unlike anything else in the hockey world.

Utah Sting? I would be happy with Utah Hockey Club.

And please fix the Utah Jazz branding...I don't even recognize the team anymore. The Jazz Note and colors are world class and they abandoned them. You can do a black or white jersey with any team colors but gotta make the Jazz Note and traditional colors part of it. And please skip the stupid mountain theme on all jerseys.

I don't like it, long term.
I think it sounds like we are trying to be a European soccer club.

A name like that may be unique, for now. But, after two or there cities do it, we will just be a team without an identity.
..unless, this becomes a trend and all teams decide to abandon nicknames. Similar to the way Las Vegas casinos are moving away from themes.

KSL ran a poll. The only two significant standouts in preference were Yetis and Outlaws. Yetis had double the preference over Outlaws. Get used to it being the Yetis

Speaking of bought in, when will they actually starting selling any tickets?
