This is great news, but I believe the address is outside both the City of Winnipeg definition of the Exchange District, and the definition of the Exchange District National Historic Site.

What are we agreeing or disagreeing with? This article basically says that Economic Development Winnipeg is going to ramp up its marketing efforts and the CMHR will be a part of these marketing efforts.

I believe disagree/agree means is "winnipeg positioned for the future with the current developements" Some listed are convention center expansion , (bringing in more buisness activity), CMHR(bringing in more tourism), EDW being involved with yes Winnipeg in developing future buisness partnerships around North America/South America,Possible future World Trade Center.

I am surprised that they would ship it all the way to Winnipeg for loading when they have to pass through Pine Falls .

CEMR has a rail line that ends in Pine Falls and I am sure the town of Pine Falls would welcome something there to replace the Tembec paper plant.

never really would think 360 main is Winnipeg's "premier" office building, but it seems to me like artis is pretty aggressive! this article made my morning anyway:

Boeing Canada's Winnipeg plant is expanding to build a large new aircraft part that will help reduce noise emissions for the 737 MAX by 40 per cent.

The 150,000 square foot expansion will grow the plant to 665,000 square feet, a 22 per cent increase

but how much will the new 8% pst cost on this large expansion? Winnipeg is stagnating! an office tower can now make $130 mil a year ($20 x 650 000 square feet of the artis building) and we get 150k sqft of new warehousing.. all announced after the pst hike!

I hear what you are saying, but lets not pretend that 8% isn't massive (and I do not mean the rise from 7% to 8%, but the 8% total). Many firms operate on modest margins - you just do not have a lot of margin to give up before you are in real tough, especially when you have a situation in Ontario where you can get it back, and in Alberta where PST isn't in the equation. I do understand that there are also more factors in play then just PST and the ability to recover it, but it does not do anything for Manitoba's ability to be a competitive business climate.

fact is, either you want to operate your business here or not. firms can get up and go in a day's notice but they are not. Winnipeg is still a cheap place to live and operate and offers a good quality of life. you can analyze it all you want but we still have the 6th highest margin of per capita head offices in canada, best neighbourhoods in Canada voted in (forks/Osborne), the best hospitals (grace/Victoria), best cabin country (no need to explain), new nhl, gorgeous museum, etc. argue it all you want, but there's still a lot of business happening here despite everyone saying the sky is falling.

The sky is not falling. That is true. That was never my point. My point was that 8% is high. If you operate at a 30% margin (as an arbitrary baseline figure), there is not tons of wiggle room. The goal should never be to drive business costs up and trumpet cabin country, an NHL team and a fancy museum. The goal should always be to drive business costs down. Many businesses in Manitoba/Winnipeg do not have the ability to up and leave as you suggest. Sure, some do, but others are here for strategic reasons - mom and pops especially. I would hope that as a population, we would be supportive of making those firms more competitive, not less competitive.
