When a streetcar driven by strikebreakers approached, demonstrators rocked it off its tracks and set fire to it. The North West Mounted Police, joined by untrained special constables, rode into the crowd with clubs and guns. Bullets were fired. Two people died and dozens were injured as a result of the confrontation on a day now known as Bloody Saturday.

To celebrate 100 years since Winnipeg was the epicentre of the modern labour movement in Canada, we are collaborating with @noamgonick and @WinnipegArts on new artwork at the corner of Market Avenue and Main Street, commemorating the 1919 General Strike!

The streetcar will get some finishing touches, including lighting and windows, over the next three weeks before it is unveiled. (Darren Bernhardt/CBC)

There is still work to complete before the streetcar will be unveiled to the public on June 21, 2019 — exactly 100 years after Bloody Saturday.

Some finishing work needs to be done on the steel, then wiring and windows need to be installed. The car will be illuminated from the inside and there will also be a beam from a headlight.

"In about three weeks' time, we're going to launch it and reveal it for the world," Gonick said.

Ai Weiwei sculpture constructed at the Forks in Winnipeg. Photos are from the CBC news article. It's still under construction, so the photos below are not the final form.

That's awesome! Missed this entirely when it was first posted. Happy to see that the impasse with Ryerson and the City about the future of the sign has been resolved.
