We don't have too many in downtown San Diego. Not counting several CVS's, there are two grocery stores.

Old Navy is big-boxish enough to count, right?

Until march this year, there was an Old Navy in Burlington, Vermont's pedestrian mall on Church Street. The building is nearly 50 years old and housed a Woolworths before Old Navy occupied it. Wish I could find a better picture.

Steely Dan: going to be the best looking Target ever.

But, please, "Carson Pirie Scott", a Chicago fixture forever, back when people had spending money.

Here's one in Charlotte that kinda sorta fits; this is the Metropolitan Midtown mixed-use development that sits on the site of what was Charlotte's first mall just outside of the urban core. There's a Best Buy on the other side of the West Elm store that you can't really see but it doesn't really front the pre-existing street:

Seeing a Best Buy at the base of the John Hancock Building surprised the hell out of me.

Pittsburgh is getting a Target in East Liberty. It'll be a two-story building with a parking garage, and it'll be the only Target in the United States with windows on the sales floor to allow for natural lighting. I couldn't find any renderings, but it's supposed to open in July.

Target bought the base of an existing 1990-era condo in Downtown Seattle last year, in the small, upcoming (one hopes) area between the main retail district and the Pike Place Market. They plan a store that, if I recall, will be about 102,000 sf. Fairly slow schedule, opening next year I think. http://www.seattlecondoreview.com/20...-district.html

An 85,000 sq. ft. "City Target" at the Metreon in downtown SF is under construction and should be ready by early 2012. The Target store will occupy the entire second floor, with street-level storefronts, restaurants and cafes lining the sidewalks. There will be a 470-seat 'dining terrace' with views of Yerba Buena Gardens, the existing AMC Theatres is planning a major renovation and the developer plans to make the fourth floor and its panoramic terrace an event space.

Nice use of levels—it’s rare to see a city building down rather than up. What are the reasons for that (or is it just to get better exposure to that nice LA sun)?

Retailers (especially chain retailers) don't usually like basements. Developers don't generally build them because they're harder to lease out.

I saw a shopping centre like that in Rotterdam. Toronto's Metro Centre is all underground with small entrances sticking up from the plaza above. And of course all the malls of The PATH are underground, or at least partially underground.

When I was younger and the Super Mario Bros. Super Show was my favorite cartoon on TV, I remember Mario and Luigi taking delivery of a "Mhirlpool" washer and dryer. The producers of the show never got sued for it, so I guess it's OK.

It was such a stupid show they probably didn't bother wasting their time with it.

Portland is also getting a downtown Target... There are already several department stores downtown, as well as grocery stores. There is also an Office Depot (or Office Max?), and several other stores like that. I'll try and find some pictures a bit later.
