Jets are also looking good so far, especially that first line of Scheif, Connor, and Villardi. Outplayed both the Flames and Panthers which is really good to see.

My hot take so far is after watching Ottawa thoroughly outplay the Lightning last night I truly think this is the year Ottawa makes the push into the playoffs and honestly I think gets a top 3 spot in the Atlantic. Tkachuk is playing like an absolute tank so far, and their D-core has improved substantially with Chychrun and Sanderson. Korpisalo appears to be the stability in goaltending the team needed.

Also, with Dach’s unfortunate injury, Montreal is going to hit the bottom really fast and it looks like another year where the tank lives on.

Chicago looking composed and the Leafs looking like Edmonton tonight.

Calgary stealing a point?

Put a few games together and we'll talk.

Campbell made lots of saves though.

Maybe Cambell's best game as an Oiler IMO given the shots and chances.

Our D still does not look very good, but it was great to see so many getting in on the scoresheet.

Ottawa looking good, although the Capitals aren't looking very good.

When was the last time Ovechkin played three games without a shot on goal?

We may (it's early so heavy on the may) be witnessing just how hard touching Gretzky's scoring records actually is. We are talking 894 goals. That's scoring an average of 53 goals a season for 17 consecutive seasons or 60 for 15 seasons.

He only needs 72. But 72 goals after age 38?

Just try playing in the NHL for more than 12 seasons.

Jagr managed to do that pace. Actually Jagr managed that after the age of 40?!?

I still think there's a good chance he does it. I don't recall Ovechkin being an overly quick out of the gate at the start of the season guy, but I'm not sure the rest of the team is capable enough to give him a shot at a decent number this year.

Ovi wants the record badly. I'm sure he will play as long as his legs can carry him in order to do so. He is such an icon in Washington, I'm sure he can play on his own terms too. Management will let him retire when he wants to retire.

Even if he only scores 25 goals per year in the twilight of his career, he will pass Gretzky within three years. He will still be only 41.

If Ovi wants it, he will do it................

Agreed. He is going to play until 45 if he has to.

Second time in four games that 'our work ethic is not to our standard'... from a team at a point in their cycle where this is simply not acceptable to be hearing.

THIS team, right now, ain't going anywhere.

WTF Oilers.

Late come-from-behind wins for the Argos and Leafs as well. Fun sport day.

Edmonton has not scored a goal in the third period through 5 games.

Woodcroft continues to look for the positives, but I simply do not feel any urgency, cohesion or accountability.

Rise, repeat.

He has a lot of influence, but 97 won't push the HC back, no.

Time for this week's highly suspect power rankings:

1 - Montreal: they have played fewer games and a pretty suspect goal differential, but they are converting games into points better than anyone else
2 - Vancouver: just a smidge ahead of number 3 with a better goal differential, but a lot of that is that first win against Edmonton
3 - Ottawa: probably the best team in Canada, but we need them to convert games into points better than 1 and 2
4 - Toronto: Also probably the best team in Canada, but the defense is suspect
5 - Calgary: pretty much a push with Winnipeg
6 - Winnipeg: same as Calgary. Getting outscored.
7 - Edmonton: it's not an out of control tire fire, but now Connor McDavid is out for a few games.

We simply cannot capitalize.

Out of 7 shots thus far, we should have had 3-4 goals and are 0-4 on the PP... including a 2-man adv.
