great pics! Downtown has gone through quite the transformation the last 15 years. It will be interesting to see where it is by the time the Olympics arrive.

Downtown LA (outside of the financial district) has to be one of the busier downtowns on the weekends. Every city's financial district is dead on those days though. Chicago/SF/DC etc.

Beautiful pics of DTLA.... Downtown HAS changed DRAMATICALLY in the last 10 to 15 years... just the last 5 years in a surprising way! I look forward to seeing what's next for LA groundbreaking wise! I think that tower next to the 777 building will be really nice and will add alot to the density of that area! Hopefully those towers on fig and Olympic break ground in the next year or so! Only problem with LA is it takes FOREVER for planning and aprovals!!! Anyway thank you for sharing your beautiful photos with us all! Would really love to see more of what's going on down there in DTLA

Very good pics, pwright1. Something about your photo essays always manage to hit the mark.....where you capture angles of a place that makes the viewer feel like they're right there.

ChrisLA & sopasej, based on his recent posting of pasadena, are other LA forumers who also have the ability to do it just right.

I've seen other ppl take so many shots of bldgs from a distance or looking straight up, or images of food or ppl, or someone walking with their pet dog down the street, that they could be Anywhere USA

This thread & sopas one.....
.
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=240721

are to me companion pieces of the LA area....they show two different aspects of socal, separated by not too many miles. But both riffing off the other.

At least more recently....a visitor of a midwest college who visited the rose bowl on Jan 1 a few yrs ago said ppl in the past had to bypass dtla & stay either in Pasadena, west la or some other more burban areas because dtla wasn't in good shape. It's taken yrs for dt to get fixed up....as have other dts throughout the country....but better late than never.

Thanks,I’m glad you liked them.

Pwright, well done, you’re living the life, I love all the things downtown is doing. I have been a supporter of downtown LA since I was old enough to go on my own, I was 13, and now I’m 55. I visit downtown as much as I can, and blown away seeing all of the changes. A few months ago I was in San Francisco, for my great aunt memorial., and while we were there we visit downtown a few times. I’m stunned that how much more vibrant LA’s downtown has is at night compared to San Francisco. I wouldn’t have been able to say that 5 years ago, it’s almost shocking, to see so much nightlife.

I would say nightlife on Broadway, looks very similar to the Mission in SF.

Spectacular photo diary of DTLA pwright. From when I first came to this forum and then started going downtown back in my mid 20's ,(37 now) when the "Hanover Tower" South Group, and Ritz/Marriott were the kickoff of the DT Renaissance, this series of pics demonstates what the city has become at it core, and what is hopefully to come. Memories of parking on the surface lot where the Broad now stands, going to the clearance sale at the closed Wilshire Grand Hotel before it was torn down, and walking through the different neigborhoods that were ghost towns, now to find the full of life.
Its actually quite a privledge to be witness to something grow.
So cool!

Yea, I think alot of people would be suprised how downtown LA has become a hub for nightlife. It's reallly amazing, given what it used to be.
Young people love it.

Amazing photos, pwright1!

Like ChrisLA, I've always loved downtown LA, even from when I was a kid back in the 70s and 80s.

And citywatch, thanks for the compliment, but I don't think I even come close to being as good a photographer as pwright1.

PWWright, thanks for being the photo-diarist of DTLA. Thankfully DTLA didn't tear down all the magnificent old buildings like it did on Bunker Hill. Now they are being repurposed. The mix of the old and new is what makes DTLA real and interesting, not just a collection of new glass towers. Walking down Broadway or Spring is a historical blast from the past. DTLA in the freeway loop now has about 30,000 residents, or soon will. Imagine what it will be like when it has 75,000, or 100,000, or even 125,000 (perhaps by the Olympics). It will rock. The more people that live there, the more people who will WANT to live there. Activity begats activity, and is magnetic. L.A. is no longer 100 suburbs in search of a center, as the old saying went. It has a strong and lively heart.
