Meanwhile, on the other side of Carlton Street, evidence of the construction of the two-tower Sutton Place Hotel and Residences is starting to materialize.

PCL, the general contractor for True North Square, has been using that site to store material, but that is starting to be removed and a Sutton Place site trailer is now on the ground.

Ludlow said excavation on that site will likely start in a few weeks.

Another detail of the renders that seemed too-good-to-be-true, but is going to come out exactly as shown. Amazing.

Yeah I've spoken to some of the vendors going in there and it sounds like it will be fantastic. Frankly, kind of like what everyone wants to see out of a "market" in the Exchange. Between this food hall, whatever happens at Marketlands and Exchange in general, and what the Forks Market has become – we're going to have three world-class food/socializing attractions downtown. It's becoming clearer that the revitalizing of South Main is IMPERATIVE in order to connect these 3 growing hubs.

What kind of vendors are lined up? Are they local or national? Will it be just a glorified mall food court or is there more off an edge to it?

It's going to be like a Marcello's/Mercatino/prepared grocery on steroids. I know several local vendors that are going to have stands in there. Not sure if it's 100% local are what but it is definitely not just a food court. I can tell you there will be a locally-run taco stand. Sounds like it may also be licensed, and may even tie in with the LC. I've heard they've also "had talks" with the LGA about the feasibility of licensing the entire plaza. No word on where those talks have gone. Can you imagine getting a margarita to go and eating it in outside in the plaza with your fresh tacos.... oh my.

I hope it’s truly successful and one food hall does not detract from the other.

Huge crane turns heads at Graham
True North now at key juncture of tall building construction
Martin Cash By: Martin Cash

It’s estimated that 18,000 people were on Donald Street for the massive Winnipeg Jets street party Thursday night as the game itself took place inside Bell MTS Place. All of the logistical considerations needed for the street closure likely were complicated by the fact that Graham Avenue between Carlton and Hargrave streets also was closed for most of the week.

It was directly related to neither the game nor the street party, but like them, the street shutdown came about as the result of enterprise by True North Sports and Entertainment.

The Graham Avenue closure was required because of the presence of the tallest crane likely ever seen in these parts, one that can rise hydraulically more than 100 metres, or about 35 storeys straight up.

The need for it to be there, at the very same time as the street party around the corner, is the timing of the construction schedule of True North Square.

The 620-ton portable Liebherr crane is used to dismantle large construction cranes and, in this case, it signals the fact that all of the verticality of the 25-storey residential-retail building at 225 Carlton St. is now complete.

"Although it may be subtle, it is fairly significant," True North Real Estate Development president Jim Ludlow said. "Once the construction crane is removed, it means all the product is on site, all that needs to be lifted by something of that capacity, is up and in the building and/or sitting on the roof of the building."

The crane that is managing construction of the adjoining 17-storey office/retail tower at 242 Hargrave St. was removed a few weeks ago. Ludlow said that building is on schedule for occupancy by the end of June — starting with the top three floors, where law firm Thompson Dorfman Sweatman is moving in.

The residential tower at 225 Carlton St. is scheduled to be ready for residential occupancy in 2019.

The food hall is all local. Chef driven. Patterned after this in Toronto. https://www.assemblychefshall.com

I think Portage Place food court will suffer the most. Cityplace has done a great job with their food court, bringing in a lot more "fresh" (if not healthy) options that many downtown workers want. Add in this higher-end market style space, and the deep-fried, burger driven, tired PP Food Court might take a blow. That's just a lot of food courts/markets in a 2 block radius. Not to mention Winnipeg square and all the street-level options in the area.

At the same time, the TNS is bringing a bunch more people downtown. A couple other nearby high-rises are being turned into apartments bringing more people downtown. A couple new apartment towers south of the UofW have/will bring more people downtown. The Bay will sort of continue to exist, maybe. The Convention Center expansion will bring more visitors to the area.

So what the Portage Place food court loses to TNS, it's gaining back from other developments.

Good news re: the TNS food hall. Assembly Chef's Hall is currently one of my top picks for out of town visitors. Also recently went to a similar, albeit smaller, place in NYC, City Kitchen:

I doubt that the Portage Place food court will feel much impact from this. As noted above, the fact that more people will be in the area will more than make up for people dropping an A&W burger for fancy duck dishes. They are chasing different markets.

South main would look incredible with something on this scale or smaller:

Wow, that would look incredible from the Forks. Just copy and paste.

does the removal of the curb mean that there can't be transit stops on that block, because it would make level boarding impossible?

Transit should just have one eastbound stop between Edmonton and Garry. Put it under the Cityplace skywalk and be done with it.

That's a temporary stop during TNS construction.

Otherwise it's not a good location. It's too close to the stop on the next block east.

With the barrier to stop pedestrians from crossing under the skywalk, the bus stop would be limited to two buses at a time. (A third bus would block the crosswalk of Hargrave, if not a lane of Hargrave itself.) That's not enough for the number of buses that get lined up in the Graham Avenue transit mall.

^ The point is that the current setup is silly (bus stops on adjacent eastbound blocks) and separating them by moving one next to TNS once construction is finished is only marginally less silly. One stop on that stretch between Edmonton and Garry, whether it's next to Cityplace or the library, should be enough.

I think you only need 4 bus stops in either direction on Graham between Vaughan and Fort. One between Vaughan and Kennedy, Edmonton/Carlton due to better access to the Hydro building, PP, TNS including the new hotel. Then between Donald/Smith and finally Gary/Fort.

A buss between Carlton/Hargrave has no better access to TNS Plaza then a Edmonton/Carlton station
