Apparently a rent issue. I guess it's hard to pay for the space one frozen dessert at a time, and there are no alcohol sales to help with the margins.

Mary Coyle Ol' Fashion Ice Cream

Mary Coyle was announced as moving into a vacant storefront in Tapestry a few months ago. Since then I saw some temporary signage that was later removed and I assumed that the venture had fallen through. Today I walked past the site and noticed a neon sign, counters, etc. Someone who appeared to be the owner came out and talked with me. Opening is imminent, they are waiting on a health department inspection.

After just over a year, this downtown Phoenix wine bar and restaurant is closed

Well this is a surprise...Rott'n Grapes on Roosevelt closed.

Uptown location remains open...

That is strange, I go to the uptown one quite often and they talked like the downtown one was busier.

Can’t tell if this is any indication of a trend with downtown venues, a consequence to outlandish rents, or just the post-summer slump some businesses can’t recover from.

Not to be a pessimist but the list of the last 2 weeks so far includes: Rotten Grapes, Snoh, Daily Jam, and Track Club.

Also, on 16th Street, Brat Haus and its adjacent donut shop D'oh have recently closed. Rents are rising all over, along with wages. If there's one common trait in most of these closures, it's second locations. Sometimes, ambitions of expansion get ahead of profitability.

Damn...will pour one out for my homies on 16.

This trend better not touch Lola, they recently opened another location on Indian School and 32nd St and I've yet to find a better Mocha elsewhere.

Interestingly, Lola on Roosevelt was once a second location. The original Lola was where Fame Cafe is situated at Central & Highland. For a while there was Lola Uptown and Lola Downtown. Now, after years of operating at just one site, it's Lola Downtown and Lola sort-of-Arcadia.

My friend Wally owned a Lola at the yard for a short time. He and Daniel didn't get along well and it closed.

That's right. I forgot that detail. A lot things seem to come and go at the Yard, except of course for the anchor, Culinary Dropout.

Daily Jam's location in the Union building at Roosevelt & 1st Ave was locked out by the landlord. Yelp says it is temporarily closed and scheduled to reopen January 8. The original location on Mill has remained open without interruption.

Looks like Barros Pizza is going to be opening up on central and virginia, where that 2601 nighclub used to be.

Great news, I really like Barro's as far as "normal" pizza places go.
