Liberals plan to make rapid transit a priority

Liberal MP Kevin Lamoureux says the NDP government hasn't put enough emphasis on rapid transit throughout its time in power.

"The city has always realized that you need a provincial partner in order to make the rapid-transit system work," adds Gerrard.

At the announcement, Gerrard was unable to give any estimates on how much money a Liberal government would contribute to any proposed plan.

An intensive, 90-day consultation period would be used to weigh all the available rapid-transit options — including light rail — but a bus system similar to Ottawa's is most likely, Gerrard says.

As for getting co-operation for any such plan with city council, Gerrard says he believes Mayor Sam Katz is interested in some form of rapid transit if the price is right.

"We believe that this is so important for the city of Winnipeg and for the province of Manitoba that after 30 years of discussion we have a government provincially which is committed all the way to moving this forward. That's a Liberal government after the next election," Gerrard says.

The platform announcement is the first of what could be many to stem from a detailed report on ways to improve the city released by Lamoureux today.

Asked whether the report might be seen as stepping outside the bounds of the provincial government by people at city hall, Lamoureux said it's meant to promote co-operation.

"This report highlights a number of areas that if in fact they were acted on would have a positive impact, would make Winnipeg that much better of a city to live in. The province does have a role to play."

Filmon was no urbanite, but he was tough on sprawl. The NDP didn't just sign off on Waverley West, they were one of the main groups pushing it as the Manitoban government owned over a third of that land.

Tough on sprawl?? I don't think so. Exurban communities grew at rates never seen before, services such as roadways and water were extended, the green belt was effectively removed, and on and on.

The priorities in the late 80's and early 90's was the economy. Filmon delivered an expanded rural economy. The problem was Winnipeg was stagnant under a list of anti-biz policies and high taxes.

Today Winnipeg has a pro-biz mayor and council .. if a business friendly premier took over the city would be in GREAT shape. In fact it would take off as we have not seen in our life times.

When Winnipeg does good so does the province .. and hense a greater ability to afford a new rapid transit system.

The greenbelt was removed by Howard Pawley, not Filmon. The latter just used the removal to expand exurban housing. They wanted to sell water to Headingley to expand that village/town.

Duff Roblin is still around. Maybe he should make another go at it...

Yeah, the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg put it in place in the 1960s, only to be removed twenty-five years later by Pawley in '86.

Just digitized my call (as "Jim from River Heights" -- I was visiting my parent's at the time) to Gary from 1998's Videon Insight program. He basically says that rapid transit would not be a priority for him were he to become Premier of Manitoba, and instead would pour money into bike paths, cross-country ski trails, and riverbank parks:

You guys should check out Google Maps. There is this new My Maps feature which allows you to build your own map overlays.

This is pretty cool. Too much suburban coverage though, I think.

Google kind of blew it by not letting it handle more lines and points. I have a third line and a few more stops that are only on the second page (scroll down on the bar to the left). If you're curious about any station or part of the system, click on a point near the part you're wondering about. I commented on quite a bit.

Oh yeah, if you didn't catch it, dark lines are elevated, medium lines at grade, pale lines submerged.

Yeah, that's why I only added stations to the Initial Plan.

I've designed the plan in a way so that you can get from one corner of the city to another only having to transfer once. I've also added an LRT/subway from Henderson to Osborne. By the time anything like this gets built (or ever gets built) we will be looking at a radically different Winnipeg, one with at least a population of 1.5 million. Rapid Transit routes should be built where there is the most trip demand. That's why I think my Initial Plan makes sense since it serves the two busiest bus routes right now while serving both urban and suburban neighbourhoods.

A lot of interesting elements in your plan biguc. I think a line on Henderson would have to go underground to avoid the Disraeli overpass though. I've also thought about extending a line on Inkster and adding a McPhillips - Notre Dame Line.

That complete plan is huge! Could you put a point on each line with a note indicating what sort of rail it is?


I have the Henderson line elevated along the Disraeli. I don't know if that's sufficient, but it'd be cheaper than submerging it, anyway.

NDP Announces Socialist Rapid Transit System (SRTS)

With all of the transportation infrastructure and the desire to recycle old products as a means to save the environment Gary Doer has annouced his vision of Rapid Transit.




Gary Doer suggested this was the best rapid transit his government could support. "Manitobians should be proud of this proposal. Don't forget to vote NDP."
