Excavation Underway at Site of Winnipeg's Much-Anticipated True North Square

Quote:
While there is not yet much to see of what will eventually become Winnipeg's largest urban redevelopment project to date, the sight of cranes, hoarding, and heavy equipment have taken over a sizeable portion of real estate south of Portage Ave. True North Square is set to rise on former surface lots and become something akin to Toronto's Maple Leaf Square or Edmonton's Ice District.

At 4am this morning the foundation contractor was moving one of their drilling rigs off site.

so are these towers going to be around the same height as the mb hydro building?

Id imagine they would be between 90 - 100 meters?

Probaby a touch shorter... They hydro building is taller than its floor count suggests.

apparent gaps in concrete in S/E corner

Does anyone know why it appears they have left "windows" below grade in the east end of the south wall of the parking garage?

I would imagine that at 28 floors tower 2 will be close or taller to hydro

Hydro is taller than 55 Nassau.

It could be close.

Fair. I'm thinking in terms of roof height. That cooling stack hardly counts. Lol I think that even if hydro remains taller tns 2 will look bigger because it won't just be a spire at its highest.

I will look for the roof height. I heard it some where before but cant find it right now. With mechanicals it should come in right around 300 ft. So yes, right around the roof height of Hydro.

^ That's impressive. It'll be nice to stand at Graham and Carlton and see a bunch of buildings built in this century for the most part (TNS, Hydro, MTS Centre, Powerhouse).

t/o roof on 26-floor residential building is currently ~87m or 285ft.

t/0 mechanical roof on 17-floor office building is currently ~78m or 256ft.

That will knock both towers down a few spots in the SSP Winnipeg diagram.

The kicker is the podium height and the first 4 or five floors of office space (however their leasing work out). Those will likely be taller in height compared to the remaining residential heights.

^ So drew's figures are general estimates and not actual TNS heights?

Without giving too much away, those elevations I quoted are including podium, and lower office levels (at least as it stands currently. I understand the design isn't final for another couple weeks).

Like how we get a new tall building every 10 years or so, looks like a new tall building due around 2020 sometime!

Gotcha, I thought you were just talking in generalities. The numbers are pretty much what I remember hearing but that was before the possible office change in tower 2.

Yeah, they won't be all that tall, but good filler for sure.

There certainly seems to be a sweet spot in Winnipeg in the 70 to 90 metre building height. Lots of buildings fall into that range.
