Did not attend, but here are some screenshots from Rail Fans Canada Discord.

This block on Front Street in Aylmer is all fenced in now, and the building looks like it will be demolished soon.

I am sure there is a proposal on the Ville de Gatineau website but it would likely be faster to ask here - what is coming?

Edit - Also, there are plans for a 6 storey building at 50 Hotel-de-ville.. right now it is zoned for only 3 storeys.

I didn't notice any construction app, but here's the demo one, which includes renders of the building at the end.

The building is supposed to go across the street, on that little parking next to laboratoire visuel.

Thanks Kelnoz! You are right, I thought 50 Hotel de ville was the other side.

Found some renders (starting at p. 11)

‘Secret’ drone installation to be built at Uplands, federal records reveal
Originally envisioned as a 4,000-square-metre building, it will now be around 6,000 square metres, records show.

David Pugliese • Ottawa Citizen
Published Apr 23, 2024 • Last updated 4 hours ago • 4 minute read

Uplands will be the site for a new $65-million military facility to control the Royal Canadian Air Force’s drone fleet.

The Ottawa installation, to be ready by 2028, will be around 6,000 square metres in size. It will be home to almost 200 military personnel whose job will be to operate and control a new fleet of drones flying from military bases in British Columbia and Nova Scotia.

The Canadian Forces and National Defence originally claimed in an April 8 statement to this newspaper that the location in Ottawa for the new building was secret for security reasons.

But that information was false. National Defence outlined details about the Uplands location in publicly available documents that are online. The department also held public consultations on the Uplands location as part of its environmental assessment for the site, government documents show.

The publicly available records outline the construction of the building as well as a parking lot for employees who will work at the Uplands site.

The documents indicate that the proposed size of the facility has increased. It was originally envisioned as a 4,000-square-metre building, according to the records, but will now be around 6,000 square metres.

Riverside hospital's neighbours 'blindsided' by potential pitch to turn green space into parking
The land in question, on Sarah Billings Place across the bus transitway from Riverside Hospital, is owned by The Ottawa Hospital.

Elizabeth Payne, Ottawa Citizen
Published Apr 26, 2024 • Last updated 1 hour ago • 4 minute read

People who live near Riverside Hospital say they were blindsided to learn the hospital is considering turning green space in their neighbourhood into a staff parking lot.

Word of the proposed parking lot — a plan for which has not been finalized, according to the hospital — was discovered after a nearby resident asked a surveyor what they were doing on the land.

“How would you like to learn from a surveyor that the green park across from your house was to be developed as a parking lot?” wrote neighbour John Martins in a letter to this newspaper.

The land in question, on Sarah Billings Place across the bus transitway from Riverside Hospital, is owned by The Ottawa Hospital. It is part of the property that was sold to the hospital by the city for $1 on the condition that it continue to be used for non-profit healthcare. Under the deal, the city could claim the surplus land back if it was not to be used for its intended purpose.

Some of that land is green space that has long been used by residents for picnics and play, among other activities, say neighbours. It also serves as a buffer between a quiet residential neighbourhood and Riverside Hospital, they say.

Doug Ford announces new provincial office in Ottawa
The Ontario Premier said the office will be used to execute the $543-million "new deal" for Ottawa announced earlier this month.

Marlo Glass, Ottawa Citizen
Published Apr 29, 2024 • 2 minute read

Ottawa mayor Mark Sutcliffe rolled out a welcome mat—literally—for Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Monday morning, as the two announced the province’s new office in the nation’s capital.

Ford said the office will be used to execute the $543-million “new deal” for Ottawa announced earlier in April. That announcement included the province taking responsibility for Highway 174, funding housing and homelessness initiatives, and cash for more police officers in the ByWard market, among other big-ticket items.

Ottawa has “unique needs” as Ontario’s second-largest city, the nation’s capital, and the economic hub of eastern Ontario, the premier said, and the new office would “improve service delivery for people and businesses in the city and throughout the region.”

The office, Ford said, will be a “central link” between the city of Ottawa and the premier’s cabinet, and will “support greater engagement with both municipal and federal governments as we implement the new deal, continue to build region’s economy, and advance shared priorities.”

The downtown office will be headed by Sean Webster, a failed Ontario PC candidate for Kanata—Carleton, who lost the by-election to Liberal Karen McCrimmon last year.

Ford said Webster was named to the position due to his combination of public and private sector experience. A press release says Webster recently held senior positions at both Canopy Growth Corporation and Shoppers Drug Mart.

“He’s well-known in Ottawa, and he’s going to be a touch-point person,” Ford told reporters.

Former city councillor and current Orléans MPP Stephan Blais quipped on social media that “the gravy train” had passed through Ottawa.

The office opened Monday, but figures on its operating costs and staffing levels were not immediately made available.

Sutcliffe said the new office demonstrates Ford’s commitment to Ottawa.

“We’ve never had anything like this before, where there’s been an office of this kind in the nation’s capital,” he said. “It recognizes that Ottawa is the second largest city, and the second most significant economy in Ontario.”

Ford noted other provinces have set up shop in the nation’s capital. Recently, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith opened a new office to increase the province’s visibility on federal issues.

Ford, though, said the office will be used to advocate on both federal and municipal matters.

When 'the kids' don't do what they are supposed to do, then an adult needs to watch over everything that they do. It seems to me that the Province is saying that Ottawa can't be trusted to do things right, so the Province is posting someone here to oversee things. The Mayor might be touting it as a 'win', but that is not how it looks to me.

And in response, the same old trope. Civil Servants should not be responsible for keeping downtown viable. Why is the city not doing more (while civil service office buildings remain empty)?

Anybody else wonder where all the Queensway traffic is coming from these days, with civil servants working diligently from home?

Induced demand, traffic lowered so people that used to not make that trip by single person vehicle are now doing so... along with a bit of people forgetting how to drive during the pandemic, causing them to do stupid shit that slows down traffic.

I think it's almost certainly from induced demand. Except instead of the classic cause of adding road capacity - "one more lane, bro" - we saw reduced traffic volumes with WFH. That then encouraged a greater percentage travelers to choose to drive. It no doubt encouraged more people to make trips on the highway at times that they wouldn't have before. I don't know if we're back at our previous traffic levels already - but I'm sure we'll get there, and more.

At some point it will become unbearable enough that the percent of people choosing transit will go back up. Those making optional trips will hopefully choose another route across the city, or choose not go at all.

...damn - I took a long time to write that - you beat me to it Williamoforange

This, and people still seem to do a lot of driving around when they are working from home. That's why this claim that work from home is great for the environment is a bit dubious in my opinion.

Yeah, my friends who WFH with the gov are shockingly (and annoyingly) keen on asking me to go places during the work day with them.

I have no doubt WFH has reduced productivity. My mechanic has stories of Federal Public servants sticking around for hours while their cars get fixed. Costco has never been busier during the day.

I'd love to see actual stats to back it up and make it harder for people (and unions) to complain.
