7-11s in the US use a different machine and the drinks are terrible IMO.
Couche-Tard (product called Sloche) is actually quite competitive with Slush Puppie across Quebec.

They have some pretty funny names for their flavours:

Winchire Wacheur (2000)[5] (Windshield Washer), formerly: Schtroumpf Écrasé (Crushed Smurf) renamed because of concerns over copyright
infringement. Actual flavor is blue raspberry.

Sang Froid (2000)[6] (Cold Blood) Actual flavor is cherry.

Goudron Sauvage (2001)[7] (Wild Tar) Actual flavor is lemonade.

Poussin Frappé (2002)[8] (Chick Shake) Actual flavor is berry.

Rosebeef (2003)[9] (Rosbeef) Actual flavor is peach.

Swompe (2004)[10] (Swamp) Actual flavor was strawberry-kiwi, but it was changed to green apple.

Cheddar Tropical (2005)[11] (Tropical Cheddar) Actual flavor is sour apple.

Liposuccion (2006)[12] (Liposuction) Actual flavor is passionfruit.

Gadoue (2007)[13] (Dirty half-melted snow) Actual flavor is wild berry.

Wontong (2008)[14] (Wonton Soup) Actual flavor is iced tea.

Sloche 10è anniversaire (2009)[15] (10th Anniversary Sloche) Actual flavor is sour apple.

Paparmane (2010)[16] (Peppermint) Actual flavor is grape.

Crème à barbe (2012)[17] (Shaving cream) Actual flavor is creamy orange.

Ouananiche (2013) (Landlocked salmon) This was actually a fake shown on
April Fools' Day.

Pizzaghetti (2013)[18] Actual flavor of the "Pizza" half is strawberry, and the "Ghetti" half is kiwi.

Savon (2014)[19] (Soap) Actual flavor is watermelon.

Was the 7-11 Slurpee actually the first slush-type sugary beverage?

Slush is that gross crap between snow and rain that makes a huge mess.

Thanks. Here was what I was alluding to with US slurpees, from that article:

Quote:
Unlike their counterparts in America, Canadian Slurpees do not contain yucca extract which gives it the airy consistency American Slurpees are known for.

I am not certain of this. Pretty sure the OP was referring to the proprietary 7-11 version is all I was trying to point out.

Wasn't it the main (only?) carbonated one? I seem to recall Slush Puppy, for example, was flat.

I don't drink that stuff, so I can't really say.

Though you live in Ottawa, so you can't have a 7-11 Slurpee anyway!

In colloquial French, there is a subtle, slight pronunciation difference between "slutsh" (slotche) which is the gross crap between and snow and rain, and "slush" (sloche) which is the beverage.

7-Eleven (Southland Corp.) was a western, Texas-based, company and had little or no representation in the east until around 1980 or so. So it and its products weren’t part of the culture out here. Sort of the opposite of Tim Hortons, which wasn’t in western Canada until around that same time.

Had a major addiction one summer during my youth. Don't drink that stuff now in my old age.

Slurpee >>> slush puppies.

They really aren't comparable. Slush puppies are more closely related to snow cones.

There is also this product (which I believe is only found in the U.S.) called "ICEE".

Anyone familiar with that? It's pretty common down there I think.

Slush Puppy was annoying because you'd inevitably slurp all the colorful goodness away and end up with a cup of plain ice.

Slurpee was blended perfection.

Growing up in Nova Scotia we didn't have these chain stores(711, macs). There was a chain called "needs" but I don't remember them having anything like a slurpee. They might have something like it now, I don't know. The only time I got try to slurpee as a kid was visting relatives in the US.

What we did have in Halifax was wendys. There is nothing better than a wendys frosty.

The Couche-Tard Slush is hundreds times better than the Slush Puppy one.
