Southland Mall's rent would be cheaper and I am sure Southland would give them a good deal. I can't see them choosing Cornwall Centre.

I'd like the Southland one to stay open, but that's because my son and I sometimes stop to pick up a new movie for the collection every now and then. The Southland is a great mall, although there have been a few too many vacant spots for too long. The reno to the Bothwell library is great.

Rent would have been pretty cheap for CD Plus at Northgate too, but that's just one piece of the puzzle. The cheapest rent won't help you if you don't have enough potential customers. But there definitely are arguments for both locations.

I don't think it really matters. I can't imagine this experiment will work at all.

Staff at the Cornwall HMV says Sunrise is taking over the Southland HMV, not Cornwall. He also said Victoria's Secret is taking over the Cornwall HMV spot. I'd take his info with a large grain of salt.

I agree - this is a pretty aggressive expansion, my hunch is that it's too much, too fast. Even if enough people are as passionate about LPs as Sunrise believes, you don't normally see relatively small companies make major leaps like this successfully.

Kinda reminds me of Postmedia's takeover of bankrupt Canwest's newspapers. The could not beleive what a great deal they were getting.

Quite a large grain... HMV's space is about 1/3 the side of Saskatoon's Victoria's Secret. Even taking over Ardene's and Volcom next door would still leave it about 3000 sq. ft. short, assuming they'd have a similar size. (I'm ignoring the hallway since those can be moved as we know with H&M).

I agree it's a risky bet, but there's 1 huge difference in the HMV>Sunrise transition vs Canwest>Post Media.

Post Media did a takeover of struggling properties and in doing so, took the baggage along with. Sunrise is just taking soon to be freed up retail space currently leased to HMV; there is no carry-over from HMV whatsoever, though I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to hire some of the staff.

From the news releases, I view Sunrise's model as somewhat akin to Comic Readers on 11th, but instead of comics, they'll stock movies/CDs/vinyl. The rest of the store will have the same pop-culture items, and from the sounds of it, a lot more than HMV.

I think they have a chance, but yes, the too big, too fast could be problematic.

That only leaves Metalsmiths or Bench as a location.
Who knows, I just read those signs before they put up the walls to do the work. I just find it odd they wouldn't include Saje Wellness on the floor plan if they've already announced its moving in beside Sephora, considering they have other future stores also on the floor plan.

Where abouts was it announced that Saje Wellness would be moving in beside Sephora? I missed that announcement.

yes - I meant take the Sunrise is going to Sland with a large grain of salt, because the Victoria's Secret info seemed completely inaccurate (short of a full reno of the area, as you note)

It's interesting because they are still listed on 20 Vic's floorplan in the same spot, yet their website has been updated to show the concept store opening in Grasslands in Summer 2017 and no mention of their Cornwall store...
Ran into some workers at an event here in montreal from Cornwall Centre and they said Saje is taking Metalsmiths spot.

Saje signage is up on the former Metalsmiths space.

Papyrus staff say they're closing around the end of next week. most stock is 50% off, some seasonal cards are $1 (Easter, Mothers Day, etc).

Saw the Saje signage up today. Still odd Metalsmith's ever put that they were renovating on small signage but probably good to get them out of the mall as that store was mostly a dead spot.

Sunrise is taking over the Southland HMV location. No news about Cornwall.

They really didn't waste time - these two theatres are now open with recliners.
(Logan & Before I Fall are the movie options right now)

My concern about the Southland theatre reno has to do with the shallow slope inside each theatre (relative to Galaxy or Imax). As it was, it was hard to see above the people in front of you unless they were quite short. If you recline and they don't...well, you won't be able to see at all.

I know they are doing this to revitalize the theatre. But it has small screens and a shallow slope for seating, so I don't think this will attract me.

Exactly. I don't go a lot to the movies but I avoid Southland because I don't enjoy seeing people's heads.

The lack of stadium seating combined with recliners does get me curious - I have a hard time imagining how it will work.

I've tend to avoid Sland because the seats are uncomfortable, and the viewing angle isn't ideal. They've clearly solved one of my concerns, but in doing so, they may have exacerbated the other... we'll see, I've got some Scene points I don't mind burning on Logan.

Regina Costco - New Location Unveiled

If this has already been posted elsewhere, please remove or merge. I had thought it was already publicly announced, but based on the way the post has gone viral over the past 72 hours, it is my assumption that this is to be treated as breaking news.

The new (relocated) Costco has been formally unveiled to be going at the new Aurora Retail Complex, in the SE corner of the Victoria Avenue and Tower Road (New name Anaquod Road) intersection.
