St Vital News:

Warehouse One is moving into St Vital from it's location on Dakota

They now have scaffolding up in front of the former Sears location (on top of the kid's playground), as well there is tarp on the 2nd floor on the Sears facing the mall. It looks like could be installing an escalator outside the Sears store.

I wonder if venues like this are now classed as "entertainment facility live" by the Lgcamb?

Paradise closing sucks.

That was our go-to pizza place.

I am not sure what happened there, but the owners locked out the employees on Saturday afternoon.

Tiny Feast announced earlier today they will close at the end of the holiday season, after being open for six years.

And they moved their location inside St. V centrecourt to across the ways. Better lighting. Not hidden kid of space inside. Very nice, more of an 80s feel.

Criminal activity, particularly theft, is almost certainly the reason. Spoke with one of the managers at the Sargent and Sherbrook Safeway recently. I had guessed things were bad, but I was shocked at the extent.

^ I'm sure that location always had more than its share, but with the recent wave you have to wonder if the end is in sight for that location. Supermarkets don't benefit from the same kinds of boffo margins that an outfit like MLCC has to soften the blow.

I am sort of surprised that the Sargent Safeway hasn't taken steps to minimized opportunity for theft. ie putting all meat and cheese behind a counter and requiring payment before you have the product in hand like many Asian groceries stores do.

FWIW I was at a 7-11 in Regina last year that only had 1-2 max of each item (chocolate bars, drinks everything) on the shelves - it was so weird. I asked why and they said they were in the top 5 stores in Canada for theft, but they had been operating like that for years.

When I was in there the lady caught 2 people Trying and just screamed and chased them. Wondered if they had different policies in SK as MB or if she was just a champ.

Definitely a sad day to see the far superior Crust being replaced with the horrible pizza that Za sells.

Horrible is like maybe just a little hyperbolic. It's not neapolitan but it's still ok. Good even

I'm not going to front, I think Za is very good, and about the best value in the city for the price. I don't put meat on my pizza mind you. But still.

Of the quick fired pizzas I would put Za dead last in the city. Pronto and Pizza Hotline have far better product for roughly the same price. Crust was also ahead of Za but at a higher cost. Coal Fired by Carbone hasn't been tested as they seem to build them about as "quick" as their St Marys location turns out food. Haven't been to Rebel but based on the experiences above I would be shocked if they didn't turn out something better than Za. And no, it doesn't matter if they cook it in a toaster oven at CityPlace or in a proper pizza oven.

Future of Grocery Retailing

I have said it many times here, we are well into the shift from traditional, large format supermarkets for grocery shopping to ordering online for pickup. I have even speculated how those same large footprint suburban supermarkets would shift from their current model to a hybrid online fulfillment/retail setup.

That said even I didn't think this level of shift would happen this quickly. It was announced today that Loblaws (known local as Superstore) will be converting 12,000 sq ft on space in a GTA location to an automated picking system for online orders. The facility will open in 2020 and service multiple stores near the pick facility. Items not in the automated pick system will still be manually picked from in store by humans and combined with the automated pick at the order verification stage. The combined order will be a single pick up for the customers.

It seems crystal clear the long term goal here is to get a pick happening in a suburban location, either a supermarket, hybrid or full fulfillment centre, and then picked up close to customers address or even delivered directly to them. The purchase of Shopper's by Weston (Loblaws) was all about that last mile real estate. In downtown there are two Shoppers locations and a third is over in the village. In the not to distant future those locations will have the breadth of selection of a suburban Superstore with a fraction of the footprint and minimal loss due to theft.

Sure older generations still want to spend lots of time walking the store and hand picking their order themselves but that is a dying trend much like bookstores, music stores and movie rentals.
