^^ Yeah, I here ya, mine is old enough to be in the kind of settinting outlined by Buzz, Not with yougins, we'll see how it all works out and is arranged when it's complete..I'm curious about the liquor license needed to make the entire area drink friendly for ages 1 and up...

In talking with them, they've finally come to the realization that if they ever want to stop being a money-losing operation (and they do), they have to cater to the people that are going to spend real money there: 20-somethings and tourists. Sorry, but your 3-year-old's mini doughnuts aren't going to cut it hahaha.

They said it's been an interesting challenge in making sure to maintain all the family aspects, but they really want the 25 year old hipsters to come there more. Makes a lot of sense business-wise. They're also doing this long term thinking about the future development of The Forks. Also, with the new food vendors coming in, they want to be able to offer a unique full-dining experience.

Well every sports venue is already like that so it's no different. When the liquor laws changed 2 years ago it eliminated the designation of the need for 18A (lol) lounge spaces. You can go drink and not eat in any restaurant now. It's the combination with retail that's the new part, and they've been working very closely with the LGA on this. It's kind of a pilot project, and if it goes well, you could see a lot more reform come soon. To start, the LGA is only allowing the first floor to be licensed as their worried about liability if people fall down the stairs.

The LC has actually started listing licensee-only liquor products (just last week) as so many places were complaining about the lack of liquor selection, especially with the cocktail boom. In the past they would only bring in a product if they felt they could sell it in store. It's actually impressive how efficient they're becoming.

^Totally makes sense Buzz. And I'll tend to agree they need to draw in the younger crowd. Ie: myself. We'll see what they come up with.

FWIW they're already working on it... I was there last week and the centre area is really starting to take shape with the new bar going up.

I am impressed at this plan. And so happy to see the 1980s blue gone.

I am also glad the blue is gone, inside anyways. Outside, it will remain for now.

^ Yeah, it got way too stale considering that it's one of the city's top tourist areas. Glad to see the market getting a bit of a makeover.

I hope they get rid of the blue on the outside and pay some attention to the awnings and entrances to johnstons terminal as well. one thing that should be updated, as well, is the street lighting on the site. the red, Asian influence is so stale IMO. maybe something will be done as they switch them to LED.

I agree on the lighting as well. Maybe something similar to the exchange streetscaping. But with a unique Forks theme to define the areas.

Welcome to Winnipeg: "don't renovate. Hesitate." and hope the nasty 80s color palette returns. Same with Portage Place. More Halle Berry, less Mimi Bobeck.

^ Only problem is that Portage Place probably doesn't make enough money from leasing its space to justify a big reno. A coat of fresh paint is probably as good as it will get in there... maybe they can at least use a different colour instead of teal? That alone might make a difference.

Even new floor tiles would make a dramatic difference.

Heck I'd take matching tiles in Portage Place at this point.

Agreed. Portage Place is definitely in need of a 21st Century makeover. Maybe even re-cladding the skywalks over Portage Ave would be a great start.

Getting rid of the late 80's to early 90's colours of greens, blues, purples, and reds from The Forks Market would definitely help!

Plans are currently in the works to redesign and update the skywalks crossing over Portage Avenue. Quite dramatic improvements from the few renders I have seen so far
