Smile Globetrekking

Hi guys..

Issues with image-hosting sites and a pool of travel photos that feels like it is growing exponentially burned me out on photo-threads for a long time..

But with hosting sorted out and a photo-thread model that I know I like from my "Freki presents Denmark" thread I finally feel motivated to start a thread covering my travels around the globe..

Like in my other thread I will post from time to time - trying not to spam the photo section - typically posting handful of photos from different locations covering a mix of urbanity, nature and architecture..

I, as always, appreciate feedback and will gladly answer questions ( so ask away ) but would prefer the thread not to get too political..

As for the photos - they are all by me and thus my property - if you wish to share them or use them do contact me beforehand - I'm very reasonable and have no intention of making money off my photos, but I do not ignore theft and I will not accept companies or commercial websites to get away with such!

Anyways enough chatter - let's get started..

Key West - Florida - USA

Bryce Canyon - Utah - USA

Dubai - UAE

Hong Kong - China

The northern Jutland peninsula is pretty dry and doesn't support much plant growth ( mainly sandy heath ) and since it's pretty windy you get several large areas with slowly migrating sand dunes.. so technically not desert, but pretty close

I have covered the area and other sand dunes in my Denmark thread if interested: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=221043

I won't ruin your photo thread by anything from youtube; just allow me this furtive link for those speaking Fr and curious.
It is pretty unbelievable, just like that concrete building in your picture.
Is it still under construction, or do people actually live in there?
In the latter case, I assume it would be demolished in just a matter of weeks over here.
At the very least, it would be completely abandoned cause it looks so unsanitary, yet most likely overpriced over there.
This shit is just amazing, and not always in a good way.

^Hong Kong is home to a lot of very run down looking buildings and surprisingly they - despite age and state - are over-packed with people paying insane rents to live there..

With so little land to build on it's all about location and while the practice is not legal as such many workers like in small cages or tiny rooms ( almost capsule hotel like ) mini apartments inside regular apartments..

Bad living conditions ( and inequality ) aside I do personally like the look of Hong Kong, including the old run down buildings - it's such a fascinating place that in one way shows both the future as well as a mindset of the path when it comes to urbanity..

If FREKI ever posts a thread with pictures only showing cloudy skies, I think I'd faint.

Make sure you sit down well away from hard objects before you click: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=187541

I could make a long post about ISO and photons, but honestly I don’t post cloudy photos much in my threads for the same reason I don’t post sad homeless people or ugly depresssing buildings or areas with severe lacking infrastructure..

I want to share the beauty of the world and I want to give viewers a positive experience!

That comes from my own interests of course as I want to see the beauty of the world and I want my travels to be positive experiences..

Sure I could show low ISO grey cloudy photos of homeless people in San Francisco or burned our cars in the rain in Hawaii, but that is not what I personally like to share, nor what viewers of my threads seems to like..

So yeah I travel to sunny places, in the periods they are sunny, and I share those sunny photos because they to me are what I like to experience and what I like to share.. ( why I’ll spend much of my summer in the US desert states so stay tuned sunny nature lovers )

Sunny weather brings out the details and beauty of the world!

Well that almost doesn't count since it's in winter, but I'll give you half credit.

Personally, sometimes I prefer taking photos in cloudy weather. In sunny weather you get lots of shadows, and sometimes you want to take a picture of something that's in the shade (like the north side of a building). My cameras (especially my cellphone camera) don't do a great job of handling that sometimes. However, when it's cloudy, the lighting is pretty even on all sides of a building, so you can take a picture of a north side of a building and it's not dark, because there's no brighter side to confuse my camera.

I suppose I could get a really fancy camera that could compensate for that, but I don't take enough photos to warrant an expense like that.

Here's what I mean (sorry, don't mean to hijack your thread). From one of my Kansas City threads.

Sunny day. Lots of shadows. In the winter especially, that can be a problem.

Cloudy day. Lighting is pretty even. Not really any shadows.

^personally I think there's a world of difference between sunny skies and overcast skies and the sun really makes the colours pop and brings out all the details.. ( low ISO and high contrast ) where I personally find overcast weather depressing to look at in comparison to how it does look in great weather..

Capturing special angels of buildings is a matter of time of day to me - why I typically do walks at different times of day when I revisit areas I have previously covered..

The lighting in winter can indeed be bad - especially up north like here in Denmark - mainly why I don't take many outdoor pictures in winter unless I visit locations close to the equator ( such as Hawaii or the Canary islands or Florida ).. and then there's the issue of naked trees and such that are equally depressing to me..

So yeah in the end I by far prefer the beauty and colours and life the sun brings out in the locations as well as photos
