Hartly, DE

Hartly is a small town in the western part of Kent County, near the Maryland border. The surrounding farmland is Delaware's Amish Country. Hartly's population is around 75.

Hartly was first settled around 1734. Hawkins Chapel was built in 1840, and the small crossroads became known as Hawkins Chapel or Hawkins Cross Roads. In the 1860's the town was known as Arthursville. The Hartly Hotel was built in 1883, and the town took the name "Hartly", after a man named Hart, a railroad employee who was successful in bringing a railroad station to the settlement.

No offense, but judging from the 1st photo, this town looks rather dreary and down at the heel.

You are correct, Hartly is not doing so well. But, not every place can be seeing growth and resurgence, and so I took pictures anyway.

Interestingly enough, a developer has mentioned that he would like to build condos in Hartly.

That Hartly Supply company building is unreal, can't believe it's still got an occupancy permit. ;) :D

The Latin Americans who view these pictures must get puzzled looking at them, wondering: Like we down here, they don't build their houses out of more permanent material? Is that all they have to build with up there is wood?:yuck:

I wonder if one of the things the Hartly Supply Company supplies is paint?? Seriously, it's been almost 5 years since these pictures were posted. I wonder if there have been any major capital improvements since then. At one point the town must have have more than 75 people, right? And is everyone in town a Methodist?? LOL Fascinating.
