I eat there at least once a week. Unless I'm taking out clients, I'm rotate my lunches between there, Tazza and the Holy Smoke. If you work close to the Beef Shack, Holy Smoke isn't that far away.

I think I posted this here before, but here it is again. A beef dip from the Shack:

If the St Louis is ever resurrected, the bar should be renamed the "Klein Bar"

Hey folks!

Where in town can I buy Turkish Delights? I think I've gotten a box at Red Mile Creamery on 17th before, but are there any other places I should go?

You can get loukoum at any middle eastern market, Danma. We got some at the Middle Eastern Bakery (17thAve/52 St SE) but there are dozens of other options- try Shaganappi Grocery or Little Lebanon for instance.

They also sell it at Klamata.

Speaking of Red Mile- handwritten sign on door said "closed until April" (which sucks if you wanted Kumpir); but yesterday there was one of those landlord letters on the door... looks like another one on that strip bites the dust; three empty storefronts, by far the worst shape that complex has been in since I've lived in Calgary.

Thanks for the help Rusty! I called you out on Twitter a couple days ago.

I was actually standing in front of Red Mile reading the sign in their window, then I remembered I posted this and -- voila -- your post led me right to them.

Meanwhile, the friends who we bought them for? Turns out they didn't care for them...

Ah, that was you! You're welcome for sure.

Interesting discussion on chowhound the other day: Sushi Motto had a $20 for $50 of sushi deal on Deal of the Day (red flag deals' groupon type site) and they sold more than 4000. Some of us are concerned how a resto can survive this sort of "success." They are selling more than $200,000 worth of food for $80,000- and a chunk of that $80,000 goes to red flag. How do restos make money with these things? Drinks?

From what I understand, the mark-up in food costs is routinely over 200% (especially in sushi and Viet places), so even 60% off, they'll be making something.

Additionally, I'm sure they're banking on many people spending more than the minimum amount of the coupon and will again regain some of their 'loss'. Also, there's 4000 people that may have otherwise gone to another restaurant and if Sushi Motto performs, it's 4000 people that will hopefully go back (and also tell their friends). A loss-leader sort of strategy.

Lastly, there's lazy people like me that ignore the groupon and red flag deals but pay attention to the local food boards (chow, beyond, here). I didn't buy one of the coupons, but due to the discussions online, it's very likely that I'll be to Sushi Motto in the next week, (foolishly) paying full price

Coffee hounds- Kawa is now selling Intellgentsia. They haven't stopped using 49th Parallel but they want to offer more roasters, in fact last week they had Phil & Sebastian on the shelf.

Moreover, they're selling Intelly Black Cat for $18/lb, while deVille, which is the local distributor, is charging $22.

Had deville for the first time today. Latte. It was excellent - had a bit of a sour note to it, which I actually like in a Latte.

I was pretty happy I stumbled upon Deville soon after they opened in Art Central. I absolutely love their coffee!
