I know it wasn't easy, especially with the way the seller kept adding Rood's photographs to eBay piecemeal (over a period of several months).




The following photographs were lost due to technical difficulties at IMAGESHACK. I'll try to replace them.

Here are some of the photographs R.H. Rood took while he was a guard at the Hollywood Bowl for an actor's benefit in 1922.

Item No. 1:
Alvarado Street is going to be resurfaced from Hoover to 8th Street, and the preparatory roughing up of the
street has revealed, at the NE corner of Alvarado and Olympic, some old brick pavement:

Item No. 2:
Two homes relocated from 981 and 987 S. Arapahoe are being restored at a lot designated as 1115 S. Alvarado.
The relocation permit is dated 2006. Here are the relocated homes in July 2007; on the right, the former 981
has some fire damage:

By April 2009 the former 987 S. Arapahoe also suffered some fire damage. I couldn't find a build date for 981, but
987's building permit is dated 1912:

I believe this snapshot shows a boss with his secretaries standing in front of City Hall
....and what appears to be an oath of some kind written in the borders.

This home is now owned by the Sadhanna Hindu Temple of New York, Inc and looks very well cared for. The interior is reportedly in very fine shape. Unfortunately the second-floor balcony porch, over the entrance, was enclosed at some point giving the home a rather blank look.

Julius Shulman visited Miramar Street in 1966. This is his "Job 4109: House, 1425 Miramar Street (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1966".



This slightly different angle shows some of the side of the house.

It looks like the tall front chimney has been removed at some point. It's also impossible to see the side of the house from the road any more due to nearly 50 years of tree growth!

After I posted the photograph I checked eBay to see if the photograph was still there (it isn't), but surprisingly there were additional photographs of this man and his fellow workers.

The seller says the man is Mr. Hunter of the Budget Dept.

I recently posted this photo (I found on Pinterest) of the LA City Hall on my Facebook page:



and in one of the replies, someone who follows my page posted this photo which she said: "Here's a view from the old courthouse (Broadway and Temple) in 1899 looking southeast towards Main and 1st Street. Los Angeles Street is on the far left." The photo was so pristine and in color I questioned her about the year, and she said that it was colorized (and therefore, I presume, cleaned up, too.)



Then someone else posted another photo from the same angle (but a little more north) as the first photo. I love the noirish (pun intended) graininess of the shot, and those heavy clouds behind.

Oy Vey- The Temple Beth Israel can be seen in the middle left - and it was the Olive block between Temple St.and Court St.- this scene was on California St. with No. Hill at the intersection- Reagh's rare booboo,d location note !!

Museums want donations, usually. They do not often make purchases. The seller is within his right to sell the photos, as was my right to buy some for my collection. if we as a society, couldnt chase treasures for private collections, society wouldnt appreciate museums. In my humble opinion. I wish I had gotten the photos from the stage actors benefit. But I have a Bebe Daniels archive so Im glad I did get two bebe daniels photos As I said I did buy a bunch of Mr Roods photos from his days with the Los Angeles City Council office. Stuff like this just sits in warehouses when it does get donated to libraries or museums. Often museums and libraries dont have time or money to properly catalog items. Mr Hoods photos has me interested in researching Paul G Hoffman further. ....It seems Mr. Rood was a part-time chauffeur in the 1920s, but for whom? For the City Council? For Fox studios, where he allegedly also worked? One photo shows him at the Stage Actor Benefit, marked "guard." I doubt he was a guard. He perhaps was waiting for whichever hollywood star he chauffered that evening. In the 1930s, he took full time employment with the City Council. I just received in the mail my delivery of the Bebe Daniels photos. I didnt realize how small the snapshots are, although the image is clear enough, and close-up enough to be considered a decent shot, regardless of the small size.
